Thousands protest at Hong Kong as Occupy Central movement begins in China

Hong Kong, Sep 28 (ANI): Tens of thousands of people massed in the heart of Hong Kong to move forward with Occupy Central protest movement late on Saturday demanding more democracy, as tensions grew over Beijing's decision to rule out free elections in the former British colony. Thousands of people converged on the headquarters of Hong Kong's government overnight into Sunday. Leaders of the movement Occupy Central with Love and Peace said the protest marked the beginning of their plan to blockade the financial district, hoping it will escalate into one of most disruptive protests in Hong Kong for decades. The crowds swelled less than 24 hours after riot police used pepper spray to disperse protesters around government headquarters, arresting more than 60 people opposed to the Chinese government's tightening grip on the city. Chennai comes to a halt after Jayalalithaa sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment

Chennai, Sep 28 (ANI): Chennai woke up to a silent morning on Sunday after a Bangalore special court held Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa guilty in the disproportionate assets case. Jayalalithaa is sentenced to 4 years of jail for obtaining assets worth almost Rs. 66 crores through dishonest means during her first tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996. Saturday, the day of the sentence, left Chennai bruised, battered and licking the wounds caused by nearly half a day of violence and picketing. A tight security is at place outside DMK Chief M Karunanidhi's residence in Chennai, a day after AIADMK supporters burnt his effigies in protest. All business establishments and offices are shut and city's transportation also came to a halt. Jayalalithaa has been disqualified from public office for at least 6 years which, combined with the jail sentence, means that she cannot contest polls for 10 years. Bangladeshi expatriates stage protest against Sheikh Hasina in US

New York, Sep 28 (ANI): Bangladeshi expatriates held a protest against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the United States. Hasina was in New York to attend the 69th edition of United Nations General Assembly. The protesters blamed Hasina for killing thousands of the countrymen.
