Floods in Odisha kill 37, water level of flooded river recedes

Bargarh, Aug 10 (ANI): Official in Odisha said that water level of flooded Mahanadi river has receded even though the death toll reached 37. However, the flood situation in Bargarh district remained grim as the back water of Hirakud dam entered five villages. The district administration has evacuated 1300 people from these villages. Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner, Pradipta Mahapatra, said there will be very little rainfall in catchment area of Mahanadi river and they have reduced the number of gates to 24 in the reservoir. People have died in Odisha since rivers burst their banks, inundating villages and farmland and forcing around 60,000 people to seek refuge in relief camps. Varanasi, Aug 10 (ANI): A supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Virbhadra Nishad complained of non-payment of pension to old people in Uttar Pradesh. The government of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh has stopped provision of pension to the old people after BJP won in the state. Virbhadra Nishad, a boatman, was one of the people who proposed Modi's nomination from temple town Varanasi for the general elections. He was also a constant supporter of the nationalist leader during the elections. However, Nishad complained that the state government of Samajwadi Party has ceased to pay due amount of pension despite him suffering from critical health conditions. Aug 09 (ANI): Director General of Police, Sanjeev Marik, visited Malkangiri district in Odisha on Saturday to review the security measures and suggest new strategies for anti-Maoist operations in the area. Marik met the chiefs of Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to discuss new strategies. Marik is a recently appointed DGP and after taking over this responsibility this was his first visit to Odisha. He said that they are trying to analyze their weaknesses and strengths so that strategies could be set accordingly to intensify anti Maoist operations.
