Kamal Haasan takes up Modi's clean India challenge on 60th birthday

Chennai, Nov 7 (ANI): Veteran Actor Kamal Haasan, took up 'Clean India' mission on his 60th birthday on Friday, swept street and picked up garbage in Tamil Nadu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the nationwide cleanliness mission on October 02 to raise awareness of cleanliness and better sanitation among its citizens under the banner of 'Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan', or Clean India Campaign. Haasan took up cleaning of Madhambakkam Lake in Chennai. Haasan participated in the movement along with the volunteers of a welfare club and volunteers of Environmentalist Foundation of India and his fans. Meanwhile, President of BJP's Tamil Nadu unit Tamilisai Soundararajan, welcomed Haasan at the lake site with floral bouquets.

Politicos react after Election Commission censures MHA over 1984 compensation

New Delhi, Nov 7 (ANI): Politicos reacted on Friday after the Election Commission in a letter to the home ministry censured the government for hiking compensation to families affected in the 1984 Sikh riots, saying it violated the model code of conduct. Congress leader Rashid Alvi, reacting over EC’s letter, said that the EC took a right step and condemned the government for breaking the model code of conduct. Leaders from other political parties also echoed similar sentiments.

Children to get 'Clean India' message through film festival

New Delhi, Nov 7 (ANI): Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar, on Friday informed that the government would be organising a three-day National Children Film Festival (NCFF) in New Delhi. Addressing a news briefing, Javadekar said that the government is keen on promoting films for children by facilitating expansion of its reach. Javadekar said that the children's film festival culture was needed to be taken to other cities and states. He said the government would lend support to organising such film festivals. The film festival in the national capital will be held on the theme, 'Swachhta', or cleanliness. The Film and Television Institute of India will be holding cinematography workshops, puppetry and animation and best out of waste workshops for the children during the event.

Theatre festival concludes with fanfare in Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneswar, Nov 7 (ANI): Theatre artists from across the country converged in Odisha to take part in a five-day national theatre festival. The festival, Purva Ranga, or 'Colours of the East', which is concluding today, attracted many spectators to Bhubaneswar city. President of Odisha Natya Sangh, Dhira Mallik, said that they had organised this festival with an aim to portray artists on national level. The festival was organised by Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy under the aegis of state tourism and culture department in collaboration with Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata. A director of Amateur Theatre Group, Mushtaq Kak, said that youth taking up theatre should come with a clean mindset as they are only keen to join silver screen actors rather than being natural artists. Performers from Jammu and Kashmir staged a play named-'An Accidental Death'- an adaptation of Dario Fo's 'Accidental Death of an Anarchist'.

It Happens: Traditional dance of archery attracts visitors in India

Shimla, Nov 7(ANI): Villagers in India's northern Himachal Pradesh state organised a fair to promote traditional dance of archery, 'Thoda', on Wednesday. The fair, which was held at Raggyan village, over 20 kilometres from Shimla city, aimed at preserving the traditional art. Many young archers were seen performing the art during the fair and urged more and more youth to preserve this heritage. On the beats of traditional drums, people aim at each other with bow and arrow on legs. One of the organisers, Pawan Thakur, said that young generation should now come forward and develop such ancient art. This fair is a blend of religious belief and love for century-old 'Thoda' sport. Locals believe that organising such kind of fairs is a symbol of prosperity.

It Happens: Devout Hindus take holy dip on full moon day in India

Allahabad, Nov 7 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged at holy River Ganges in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state to take a holy dip on the occasion of 'Kartik Purnima' or full moon day on Thursday. Devout Hindus thronged river bank in northern Allahabad city to perform rituals at the confluence of three holy rivers-- Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati. As per tradition, holy dip in River Ganges is described as auspicious on full moon day as it leads to salvation. Legends say Ganges has flown from the heaven to the earth to wash away the worldly sins of mankind. Another devotee, Sushma, said earthen oil lamps are floated in the river and prayers are offered to the almighty. People in Hapur town also celebrated the full moon day. Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were made to avoid any mishap. Life on the banks of the Ganga begins well before dawn when thousands of pilgrims - men, women and children, come down to the river to wait for the rising sun.

It Happens: Devotees celebrate birth anniversary of Sikh guru

Amritsar, Nov 7 (ANI): Devotees thronged holy Sikh shrine Golden Temple in Amritsar city of India's northern state of Punjab on Thursday to mark the 545th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh faith. Thousands of regular devotees and pilgrims from far and near converged at the Golden Temple to pay obeisance to the holy book Guru Granth Sahib, light candles and offer prayers for the well being of their families. A devotee, Gurvinder Singh, said people from far off places visit the holy temple to seek blessings for a better future. Fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, was known for his humility, service, and deep devotion. He founded the city of Amritsar and designed the Golden Temple. On this particular day, revered as the most auspicious, devout Sikhs and even others from across the world throng Golden Temple to take holy dip on the occasion of Sikh festival Gurpurab. Meanwhile, in Poonch district of northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, devotees took part in a procession where the youths displayed their capabilities in martial arts. Sikhism was founded in the 15th century in Punjab by Guru Nanak Dev and has had 10 successive gurus. Guru Nanak was born in Nankana Saheb on this day in 1469.

'Down to earth' PM Modi stands up to correct mic direction for Jayapur village head

Jayapur, Nov 07 (ANI): Presenting a perfect example of humble and a modest prime minister, Narendra Modi at the adopting ceremony of the Jayapur village got up to correct the mic direction for the village head. As the village head Durgavati started her welcome speech on a comparatively high podium, PM Modi got up to lower the mic for her.
