President hosts special programme at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Guru Nanak's birthday

New Delhi, Nov 06 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday hosted a special programme on the occasion of Guru Nanak's birthday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Hamid Ansari along with other senior leaders attended the ceremony. People from the Sikh community chanted hymns and recited prayers and the audience joined in. Mukherjee also addressed the audience on the occasion. Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh guru and the founder of the Sikh religion, was born on the full moon day in the month of Kartik as per the Hindu calendar.

Visakhapatnam police arrest professor for allegedly supplying explosives to Maoists

Visakhapatnam, Nov 06 (ANI): Police in Visakhapatnam city of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, arrested a professor of a state-run university for allegedly supplying explosives to Maoists. According to media reports, Professor J Apparao, who teaches in Telugu Department at the Andhra University, had long been a tribal activist. He allegedly had links with the Communist Party of India (Maoists) and other rebels. Police officials arrested Apparao from his residence in wee hours on Thursday. Students and staff members of the university staged protests outside the office of Superintendent of Police, Visakhapatnam, K Praveen, demanding his release. Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, Professor GSN Raju said that some people on the campus had warned him of his alleged involvement in suspicious activities. He added that actions would be taken against Apparao, if found guilty.

Paramilitary Assam Rifles gun down four militants in Assam

Dima Hasao, Nov 06 (ANI): Four militants were killed in two separate encounters with paramilitary Assam Rifles and the police in Dima Hasao district of Assam on Thursday. Huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the militants. According to reports, the Assam Rifles had launched an operation near Robi Basti village, and indulged in a gun battle in which three militants were killed. Two AK series rifles, 73 rounds of ammunition and other war-like stores were recovered from the militants. The militants belonged to National Socialist Council of Nagalim - Isak- Muivah (NSCN-IM) rebel group. Meanwhile, another operation was conducted near Kopilo village, a day before, on the junction of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, an area frequented by NSCN (IM) insurgents for their transit into the state, said sources. In the encounter an ultra was killed and one AK-47 rifle, one Lathod rifle, one hand grenade and over 100 rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.

Satish Upadhyay says forging 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' condemnable, had no knowledge about same

New Delhi, Nov 06 (ANI): Clarifying on the controversy over his cleanliness drive, Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay on Thursday said that he totally condemns forging of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and that it should be taken seriously and carried on honestly. He also said that he or any BJP leaders had no knowledge of the same and he went there as a participant. Upadhyay said that it was a program of the Islamic Centre and he was there for a few minutes only. He further condemned the incident saying it was a human error and should not be done in future. Earlier, some photographs had emerged of garbage being dumped purposely on a Delhi sidewalk for a photo opportunity featuring Upadhyay and former AAP leader Shazia Ilmi.
