Road accident kills four hawkers in Patna

Patna, Oct 3 (ANI): Four people were mowed to death and four others were injured by a car which hit the hawkers sitting along the side of a road in Patna on Friday. Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Patna, Amit Kumar, said that an Indica car hit the people near Mahavir Cancer Institute at Phulwarisharif area. Reportedly, the car driver has been detained by the police. A hawker, Mohammad Alam, witnessed the incident that took place early in the morning.

Durga Puja Pandal in Kolkata focuses on tiger conservation

Kolkata, Oct 03 (ANI): Residents in Kolkata city of West Bengal have made a pandal, based on the theme of Sundarbans forest for the ongoing celebrations of Durga Puja. The representation is drawing attention to the need for preservation and conservation of the Royal Bengal tigers which have been under threat from habitat destruction, illegal trade for body parts, natural calamities and poachers. The pandal created with an aim to spread awareness among the people about tiger conservation drew hundreds of visitors and got a good response. The four-day Durga Puja festival is the biggest Hindu festival in West Bengal. In Kolkata alone, more than 10,000 pandals in various themes are set up to venerate the mother goddess Durga. Legend has it that "Asuras" or demons from the underworld invaded the heavens after a hundred years of war with the gods.

Devout Hindu's celebrate victory of good over evil amid worshipping Ravana

Kanpur/Varanasi, Oct 03 (ANI): Hundreds of devotees worshipped the mythological demon king Ravana on occasion of Dussehra, which marks the victory of good over evil. Among the devotees in Kanpur, they believe that Ravana was an intellectual man of his times and this is one of his rare temples. The manager of the temple, Tirloki Triwedi said on Friday that the doors of the Dashanan Temple in the town are opened once in a year on the day of Dussehra. Meanwhile, in Varanasi, artists from Kolkata performed traditional form of center stage play for the residents. The center stage play popularly known as 'Jatra' which mean traveling is performed by artists who travel to many place and act out a play which deliver social message among the audience.

Kashmir witnesses sanitation drives after flood waters recede

Srinagar, Oct 03 (ANI): The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, has been witnessing frequent cleanliness and sanitation drives ever since the flood waters receded in the city, where more than one million people reside. Emergency workers have been battling to prevent waterborne diseases like cholera from spreading as fetid water swilled around the Kashmir valley after the worst flooding in more than a century. Sanitation and cleanliness drives have swung into motion as the waters recede after a month of heavy flooding. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has deployed tippers, robotic arms and excavators, among other machinery alongside hundreds of staff members who have been cleaning roads and garbage non-stop. The Municipal Commissioner, GN Qasba, said that a record 22,000 metric tonnes of garbage had been extracted from the city after the floods. Residents affected by the floods could not dispose of their trash since all systems had been washed away by the floods.

Two Maoists surrender before BSF in Odisha

Malkangiri, Oct 03 (ANI): Two rebels working for Communist Party of India-Maoists surrendered before paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) in Odisha on Friday. It is an achievement for BSF which has been trying to tackle the Maoist insurgency in Malkangiri district of Odisha. The Maoists, who have been identified as Laxman Pujari and Chaitanya Harijan, surrendered before BSF Deputy Inspector General, KV Raghavacharyulu, at a surrender ceremony at the BSF sector headquarters. For the first time any Maoist has surrendered before BSF in Malkangiri. But the step was welcomed by Raghavacharyulu.

New Delhi, Oct 03 (ANI): Indian boxer L Sarita Devi, who has been shrouded in controversy at the 17th Asian Games at Incheon, on Friday defended her refusal to accept the bronze medal. Her refusal to accept her bronze medal on the podium went against the values of sportsmanship, Asian Games organisers had said, adding they were reviewing the incident and could take action against her. Devi refused to wear the medal when it was presented to her on October 01, taking it only in her hand before trying to drape it over another competitor who had beaten her in a fight the previous day. Devi had to settle for the bronze medal after losing her lightweight semi-final on Tuesday (September 30) to South Korea's Park Ji-na, who was declared a unanimous 3-0 winner. However, the boxer defended her actions, saying she did it for her country.
