Ban Ki-moon aims to provide universal energy access to seven billion by 2030

Vadodara, Jan 12 (ANI): United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said their aim is to provide universal energy access to all seven billion people in the world by 2030. Ban said this during the inauguration of 10 megawatt canal top solar power plant in Vadodara. The power project envisaged covering of 3.6 km of Vadodara branch canal with solar panels installed on mounting structures. Ban expressed happiness and applauded India for solar initiative. United Nations aims to widen the use of renewable energy and raise billions of dollars in aid for developing countries in an effort to increase the prospects for a wide-ranging deal to slow global warming.

Casino busted by police in Gurgaon, 43 arrested

Gurgaon, Jan 12 (ANI): The Gurgaon Police in a raid busted an illegal casino running in the DLF Phase II area of the city, and has seized large quantities of cash and liquor from the site. According to media reports, the police have arrested 43 people, including five Nepalese women, and seized rupees 20.4 lakh from the gambling den. The arrested will be booked under the IPC Public Gambling Act and Excise Act. The police team had raided the premises and unearthed a full-fledged dice joint being run on the ground floor of the house. Police is carrying out further investigations into the matter.

Police arrest 12 militants with arms and ammunition in Assam

Chirang, Jan 12 (ANI): Police arrested 12 militants and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from them on the third-day of operation in Assam. Superintendent of Police, Ranjan Kumar Bhuyan, said a joint operation with paramilitary forces was launched in the Manas reserve forest on the intelligence input. The militants belonged to banned outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), which is fighting for a separate homeland for indigenous Bodo tribesmen, saying that the tea-growing state has been flooded with outsiders.

Witness in Asaram Rape Case shot dead in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 12 (ANI): Former aide of Asaram Bapu was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Jansath Road under New Mandi police station area in Muzaffarnagar when he was returning home. Akhil Gupta was also a witness in the Asaram's Surat rape case. Police said Gupta was shot at when he was on his way home and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. Gupta was a cook and personal aide of Asaram, who is in jail in connection with another case of sexual assault on a minor girl. Two sisters in Surat have accused Asaram and his son Narayan Sai of raping them.

Encounter with Maoists in Chhattisgarh leaves one policeman dead

Raipur, Jan 11(ANI): An encounter between security personnel and Maoists in Chhattisgarh left one policeman dead and four others injured. The incident happened in Narayanpur district of the state when joint team of police and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were out on an operation after receiving information about the movement of Maoists in the area. The police are yet to investigate which Maoist group was behind the attack.

CLP Holdings plans to invest $2 billion for coal power plant in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, Jan 12 (ANI): Hong Kong-based China Light & Power (CLP) Holdings Limited said that it is planning a 2,000 megawatt coal-based power plant at a projected investment of $2 billion in Gujarat. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CLP Holdings, Richard Lancaster, said this while addressing mediapersons on the sidelines of Global CEO Conclave, being held as part of the seventh edition of Vibrant Gujarat business summit. The Hong Kong based company is keen on developing renewable energy, especially in the form of solar and wind farms in India.

Israel to set up 10 centres of excellence in India to help farmers

Gandhinagar, Jan 12 (ANI): Israel Agriculture Minister Yair Shamir said that Israel will set up ten centres of excellence in India to help farmers improve their output with better technology. Shamir signed the agreement just before his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shamir added Israel could help India a lot. Vibrant Gujarat, held every two years, has yielded billions of dollars in investment promises but only a fraction of the deals announced have come to fruition. Modi aims to lift stagnant capital investment that has held back India's growth to 5.3 percent.

Delhi University students on a tour to explore northeast region

Guwahati, Jan 12 (ANI): The Dharohar-Gyanodaya Express train, carrying 870 students and teachers of Delhi University set off on an educational tour to the Northeast on December 18 in an endeavor to expose the students to the rich culture and heritage of the region. The train was flagged off from Safdarjung Railway station by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister of state for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal. Started in 2012 as the ‘College-on-Wheels' project, this is the fifth edition of the Gyanodaya Express that will cover all the 8 northeastern states and conclude on December 29. The train first arrived in Guwahati from where the students, divided into 9 groups, were taken to various parts of the Northeast. During the 7-day long trip, the students did a variety of sightseeing activities, interacted with the locals and worked on a specific project related to the Northeast.
