PIO cards now valid for lifetime

New Delhi, Oct 07 (ANI): Effectively fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's announcement on consular and visa issues during his address at the Madison Square Garden in New York City last month, all Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cards are now valid for the lifetime of the cardholder, instead of 15 years, according to a Gazette notification issued on September 30th, 2014. Following Prime Minister Modi's announcement that PIO cardholders would be exempt from police reporting, the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued instructions through the same Gazette notification dated September 30th, that PIO cardholders would not be required to report to a police station even if their visit to India exceeds 180 days. Swiftly implementing all the announcements made by Prime Minister Modi, instructions have been issued to Embassies and Consulates that unless there are exceptional circumstances, visas to US nationals should normally be given for 10 years. India beefs up security in border region with Bangladesh in wake of blast

Siliguri/ New Delhi, Oct 07 (ANI): India's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) tightened security in areas bordering Bangladesh in wake of the bomb blast in Burdwan district of West Bengal. Two women have been arrested in connection with the explosion that left two suspected militants dead on Sunday (October 05). Police is probing the possible involvement of militant outfits like Lashkar-e-Toiba and Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami in the blast. India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that the regional party Trinamool Congress, which rules West Bengal, has turned the state into a safe haven for militants and accused chief minister Mamata Banerjee of protecting the militants. Child injured in firing by Pakistani Rangers on Kashmir border

Flora, Oct 07 (ANI): Unprovoked firing by Pakistani rangers on Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) left at least one child injured in the Flora village of Jammu and Kashmir. At around 9 PM Monday, border posts of BSF were fired upon by the Rangers, to which the Force retorted. A ten year old boy, Ankush, from Flora village in Arnia sector of Kashmir, sustained injuries while a cow and a goat were killed in the firing. The unprovoked firing has damaged people's houses, forcing the hapless residents to flee their homes and look for safer places. Earlier in the day, angry protesters in Kashmir burnt Pakistan's flag to show resentment against unprovoked ceasefire violation, which had killed five civilians and wounded many more. Oct 7, 2014

Protesters in Kashmir burn Pakistan's flag for violating ceasefire

Kathua, Oct 07 (ANI): Angry protesters burnt Pakistan's flag in Jammu and Kashmir to show resentment against ceasefire violation, which killed five civilians and wounded at least 25 on Tuesday. Pakistani forces shelled the village of Arnia about three km (two miles) from the border in the early hours of Monday, killing five and wounding at least two dozen civilians. Meanwhile, a protester in Kathua district, Karan Kumar, said people are living in constant fear due to incessant firing. Meanwhile, another protester, Kuldeep Kumar, called for peace at the border. EC sends notice to Gadkari for alleged violation of model code of conduct

New Delhi, Oct 07 (ANI): The Election Commission has sent a show cause notice to Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for an alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct committed in Maharashtra's Latur District recently. In a statement, the Election Commission said, Gadkari while addressing a public meeting in Latur District on Monday, had allegedly induced voters to accept bribes if offered by someone. The Election Commission said that as per the complaint received from the district election officer of Latur, it found Gadkari's statement to be amounting to abetting and promoting bribery, and deemed it to be violative of the Model Code of Conduct that is in place for the state assembly elections to be held in Maharashtra and Haryana on October 15. Skill development programmes help to generate employment for Kashmiri youth

Kathua, Oct 7 (ANI): Unemployed Kashmiri youth are being imparted with various technical trainings in a bid to explore their livelihood opportunities. 12 skill development programmes are running with as many as 100 unemployed youths being part of it. Project Officer, District Urban Development Agency, Zaffar Abbaz said that training to youths is being given by professionals in technical courses like welding, electronics, cutting tailoring, fashion designing and on computers, for a period of six months to one year. These training programmes are of free of cost and not just boys but even girls' participation was seen in large numbers. The youths who had completed six months training were also given multi-purpose tool kits and even a diploma.
