Political candidates in Goa urge voters to exercise their franchise

Panaji, Apr 2 (ANI): In a bid to elevate awareness among people for greater participation in the democratic process, a non-governmental organization in coastal state of Goa organized a direct interaction between people and political candidates from different parties to encourage people to exercise their voting right. One of the organizers, Vijay Kumar Sullakar, said this was being organized keeping in mind the election date of April 12 in the state and it was an awareness drive among the voters.

Nitish Katara Murder Case: Delhi High Court upholds conviction of three convicts

New Delhi, Apr 2 (ANI): In a major development, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday upheld the conviction of three convicts by the trial court in the 12-year-old Nitish Katara murder case. The Delhi High Court, while passing the order, said Nitish Katara's murder was a case of honour killing and there was no need for a re-trial. The High Court said that the trial court had rightfully found three convicts – Vikas, Vishal Yadav and Sukhdev Pehelwan - guilty of kidnapping and murdering Nitish Katara in 2002. According to the prosecution, Vikas and Vishal killed Nitish Katara on the night of February 17, 2002 after abducting him from a marriage party in Ghaziabad. Seeking death penalty for the convicts, the prosecution told the high court that Nitish Katara and Bharti Yadav were in an intense relationship and her family's opposition to their friendship led to the killing of Nitish Katara. Nitish Katara’s mother and prosecution, Neelam Katara said that she is happy as a mother and as a Indian citizen with today’s decision.

Chilean authorities say 2 confirmed dead following massive quake

Arica and Central Chile, April 2 (ANI): Two people were confirmed dead and three were seriously injured when a major earthquake struck off the northern coast of Chile on Tuesday night, authorities said. The earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck triggered a tsunami that hit the northern part of the country but no serious damage was reported. Residents across northern and central Chile were evacuated from their homes. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake generated a large tsunami with the biggest wave reported at 2.3 meters. The Chilean navy said the first big wave hit the coast within 45 minutes. The government said it had no reports of significant damage to coastal areas, but around 300 prisoners took advantage of the confusion and escaped from a jail in Iquique, Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said.

Security personnel seize huge cache of explosive material in Jharkhand

Giridih, April 2 (ANI): In a joint operation, police along with paramilitary, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in Jharkhand seized huge cache of explosive material that could have allegedly been used by Maoists to attack security forces during upcoming elections.
