India certified as polio-free by WHO

New Delhi, March 28 (ANI): The World Health Organisation declared India free of the crippling polio virus during a ceremony in New Delhi, making the country's almost two-decade-long, multi-billion-dollar effort one of the biggest public health achievements in recent times. India's last case of the wild polio virus was detected in January 2011 in a two-year-old girl in West Bengal. The ceremony was organised in New Delhi to give the official certificate to India for this achievement of eradicating the disease from the country. Southeast Asia director of WHO, Poonam Khetrapal Singh, said that the ceremony marks one of the biggest public health achievements in the world. Mar 28, 2014

Political parties hit out at central govt for abstaining from Sri Lanka Resolution in UNHRC

Chennai/ New Delhi, March 28 (ANI): Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) hit out at central government after it abstained from voting on a US-sponsored resolution for probe into war crimes in Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The resolution was adopted as 23 countries voted in its favour, 12 against it while others abstained at the 47-member-state forum in Geneva. Kathua, March 28 (ANI): Suspected terrorists in army uniform launched a series of attack in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday killing one person and injuring others when they attacked an army camp close to the International Border with Pakistan. Army and police teams have been chasing the militants since 5 am, when the militants allegedly stopped a Mahindra Bolero vehicle on the Jammu-Pathankot highway and fired indiscriminately at the passengers.
