Foreign educated Indian doctors protest in New Delhi, demand employment

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Unemployed foreign educated Indian doctors took to streets in New Delhi on Tuesday to demand employment and scrapping of a screening test. The protesters gathered in large numbers and shouted slogans demanding justice. They alleged that the screening test they need to take in order to get a job is too difficult to pass. The protesters said that on one hand when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is calling students who have completed their studies abroad to India, the youth is sitting without jobs for past several years.

Court orders release of Manipuri activist Irom Sharmila

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): A sessions court in Manipur, Tuesday, ordered the immediate release of civil rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act for the past 13 years. The 42-year-old _Iron Lady_ of Manipur was kept under house arrest following fears that she wants to commit suicide. She is being nose-fed by the state government at a government hospital, which was converted into a jail for her. The Manipuri government had slapped an attempt to suicide case on her. The court said that it is just an allegation that she wants to commit suicide, hence she cannot be kept under arrest and should be released immediately. Sharmila has been on indefinite hunger strike to demand repeal of the Act after killing of 10 civilians allegedly by the Assam Rifles near Imphal airport in November 2000.

Police recover arms and ammunition from Maoists in Jharkhand

Palamu, Aug 19 (ANI): In a joint operation, officials of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police recovered arms and ammunition including three rifles, life cartridges and two bombs during clashes with Maoists in Jharkhand. The security personnel clashed with Communist Party of India-Maoists (CPI-M) on Monday night (August 18) in Palamu district and also recovered 33 different SIM cards, mobile phones and solar charger. Superintendent of Police, YS Ramesh, termed the arms haul a success. Two Maoists were injured during the encounter and all of them managed to escape. Maoists, also known as Naxals, have killed police and politicians, and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since 1960s.

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday informed that the central government is planning to bring changes in the Motor Vehicle Act. He added that the government is likely to redefine the role of Regional Transport Offices by curtailing human interference and by using more technology in issuing licenses, in order to avoid corruption in the transport department.

Police baton charge employees protesting against Kashmir government

Srinagar, Aug 19 (ANI): Police baton charged employees of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department on Tuesday (August 19) as they took to streets in Jammu and Kashmir against apathy of the State government towards their long-pending demands. The PHE employees came out in droves in Srinagar city and shouted anti-government slogans. The employees were detained as they marched towards Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's office. President of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Association, Sajjad Ahmad, threatened to intensify their protest if the government failed to pay heed to their demands.

River flows above danger mark in Moradabad, villages on alert

Moradabad, Aug 19 (ANI): People of Hridyapur village in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh were moved to safer places on Tuesday as river Ramganga flowed above the danger mark. Water in the river went up due to heavy rains in the region. A resident, Shyam Sundar, said they had no alternative as the water had reached the villages. Meanwhile, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Moradabad, Shailendra Kumar, said release of floodwater from Uttarakhand also resulted into overflowing of the river. The administration, however, is making all efforts to stop the water from entering into the nearby villages. According to reports, in 2010 the government had promised to build a dam here, but nothing has been done till now.

Shutdown in Telangana to undertake survey for welfare schemes

Hyderabad, Aug 19 (ANI): The state government in Telangana called for a shutdown as it began conducting a survey of households on Tuesday to enlist poor for welfare schemes. The state government, in a day-long survey, would go door-to-door and ask details of around 8.4 million households. Almost two million volunteers would collect information. Meanwhile, streets in capital city of Hyderabad wore a deserted look and schools, shops, banks and petrol pumps also remained closed. According to Telangana Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhara Rao, the survey would help the newly formed government understand its social composition, corruption, cut wastage and make better welfare schemes, especially for the poor.

Singapore defence minister holds talks with Sushma Swaraj to bolster ties

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Singapore's Defence Minister, Ng Eng Hen, held talks with Indian Foreign Minister, Sushma Swaraj, in New Delhi on Tuesday, to enhance bilateral defence ties. The two Southeast Asian countries enjoy strong defence ties, apart from powerful political and trade relations. There are regular military exercises between India and Singapore. Bolstering foreign ties forms an important part of Narendra Modi and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's agenda.

Decision to scrap foreign secretary level talks childish: Geelani

Srinagar, Aug 19 (ANI): Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Tuesday described as "childish and undemocratic" the Indian Government's decision to call off of foreign secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan. BCCI sidelines Fletcher, appoints Shastri as Director for England-India ODI series

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Following India's 3-1 Test series loss to England, the BCCI cracked the whip on Tuesday by sidelining team coach Duncan Fletcher and asking the bowling and fielding coaches to go on leave. It asked former Test cricketer and now commentator Ravi Shastri to assume charge of the team as director for the five match ODI series. The five-match ODI series against England will get underway in Bristol from August 25. The BCCI has relieved bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding coach Trevor Penney off their duties for the one-day series and appointed Sanjay Bangar, former Indian all-rounder, and former India fast bowler Bharat Arun as assistant coaches of the team. R Sridhar will join the support team as the fielding coach of India for the one-day series.

SC rejects Asaram bail plea, constitutes medical board to examine health

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Asaram’s interim bail plea which was filed in consideration of his ill health. Lawyer PC Solanki said that the interim bail filed by Asaram was rejected and the Supreme Court has given orders to constitute a medical board in order to examine his health and the report of which should be provided by September 23. He added that the next hearing will take place on 23rd September and would be based on the medical report.

Politicos react as Chinese troops enter 25 km deep into Indian territory in Ladakh

New Delhi/ Lucknow, Aug 19 (ANI): Even as India-Pakistan relations hit a new low with the Narendra Modi government calling off secretary-level talks, relations with another neighbor – China - also seemed to plunge with reports emerging of Chinese troops blatantly entering more than 25 kilometers into Indian territory in Ladakh and claiming it as theirs.
