Gujarat EC HS Brahma questions on intensity of punishment for violators of Compulsory Voting Bill, P

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Political leaders on Tuesday react after Gujarat Election Commissioner HS Brahma said that in his view, the Gujarat government’s move to make voting compulsory in elections to local bodies "may not be correct". He also questioned on the intensity of punishment for the violators of Compulsory Voting Bill and asked if the state government will put eight crore voters in jail or impose fines on them on violation. Congress leaders Arjun Modhwadia and Rashid Alvi supported the statement and said that the same needs to be decided first by the state government. Modhwadia also challenged the feasibility of punishing a large section of offenders. NCP and BJD too followed suit and said that EC has raised correct question. Meanwhile, BJP Spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that Gujarat government's initiative is phenomenal and a great initiative for democracy of India. Nov 11, 2014

Paramilitary holds shooting contest to test marksmanship of personnel

Kadarpur, Nov 11 (ANI): India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force organised a shooting competition to test the marksmanship of its personnel and to inculcate an atmosphere of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Around 766 police personnel from across the country participated in this annual shooting competition held in Kadarpur village in Haryana. This year, a total of 31 teams from 24 states took part. Speaking on the event, Director General of India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Pranay Sahay, told mediapersons that it is a useful platform for police personnel. Olympic medalist, boxer Yogeshwar Dutt, personnel of Haryana police received the Padma Shri, fourth highest civilian award of India, while female boxer, Mary Kom, working with Manipur police received the third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan for their stellar performances in the games. Bilaspur, Nov 11 (ANI): After eight women lost lives due to sterilisation surgeries went wrong in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, state Chief Minister Raman Singh said that four doctors involved were suspended and a case of criminal offense has been filed against them. Singh also said that the case is of medical negligence by the doctors and will be dealt with seriously by the state government. He also announced compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to families of dead and free medical treatment and Rs.50,000 to those undergoing treatment in hospital. Eight women had died after they underwent sterilisation surgeries at a camp on the outskirts of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. The women had been discharged on Saturday after being given medicines. New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Political leaders on Tuesday (November 11) condemned the deteriorating security in Kolkata city following an explosion near the office of federal counter-terror intelligence agency. A senior police official investigating the incident said no trace of explosive had been found in the area near the National Investigation Agency (NIA) office in the city. An interior ministry official had said according to preliminary information nobody had been injured. The official, who did not wish to be named, said the ministry planned to send a team from Delhi to investigate the matter. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Yobe State, a territory close to the stronghold of Sunni Muslim Boko Haram militants, who have staged a five-year insurgency. Angry locals had blocked access to the school and an adjoining hospital, preventing security forces from getting close to the site of the explosion. Boko Haram has intensified its attacks since the Nigerian government announced a ceasefire agreement last month as well as the imminent release of more than 200 school girls kidnapped by the group.
