Suspected al-Qaeda Mali rebel first to face war crime charges for damaging cultural heritage

Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahd is accused of destroying historical monuments in the northern Mali city of Timbuktu. He stands trial, the first of its kind, at the International Criminal Court at The Hauge, Netherlands. Ansar al-Dine, Malis al-Qaeda affiliate, destroyed 14 of 16 historic mausoleums in Timbuktu in 2012. It is expected that al-Mahd will plead guilty to the charges. Aug 22, 2016

Turkey: Mourners chant Murderer Erdogan at Gaziantep bomb victims funerals

Mourners at a funeral for victims of the Gaziantep bombing attack chanted Murderer Erdogan, referring to Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. At least 50 people were when killed when a suspected suicide bomber detonated a device during a wedding. The president blamed the attack on Isis militants. Aug 22, 2016

Australia: Men who released three crocodiles into a school are being hunted by police

Northern Territory Police are searching for four men who were captured on CCTV footage breaking into a high school in Humpty Doo and releasing saltwater crocodiles. Senior Constable David Gregory from Strike Force Trident said police were alerted to the incident just after 5am. “Police are appealing to the public for information as to the identity of the offenders. Parks and Wildlife Rangers were called to the scene to safely remove the reptiles. Aug 22, 2016
