Ludhiana runs for Dil ki Daud marathon

Ludhiana, Sep 28 (ANI): On the occasion of World Heart Day, a hospital in Ludhiana held a marathon with the aim of motivating people to run daily in order to maintain a healthy heart and body. On Sunday around 2500 people, including leading professionals, athletes, senior citizens, patients and doctors from Amritsar, Jammu, Chandigarh and other nearby regions participated in the marathon. The marathon was flagged off by former hockey player, Pargat Singh. In a massive show of solidarity and unity for the purpose of spreading the message of a strong heart and emphasizing on the need for a healthy lifestyle, hundreds of doctors along with their families, ran for the cause called 'Dil ki Daud' (Race for heart).

Floods and sand deposits ruin farmer s crops in Amritsar

Amritsar, Sep 28 (ANI): Sand deposits left by the flooded river Ravi in fields leaves farmers’ crops damaged in Amritsar district of Punjab. Heavy rainfalls over-flooded the river on the border belt of Dera Baba Nanak and Ajnala sector, burring thousand acres of land. Farmers living in the area cultivate around 10,000 acres of fertile land which has been rendered useless for two to four years because of the sand deposits left by the river. A farmer Major Manmohan Singh said that his entire crop has been damaged. Reportedly, the farmers are asking for government’s help in removing the sand from their fields and provide electricity connections for tube wells so that the affected agricultural land could be made fit for cultivation.

Grenade Blast At Amway Head Office In Imphal

Mantripukhri, Sep 28 (ANI): The Amway office located near the NRL Oil Pump in Mantripukhri under Heingang Police Station witnessed a hand grenade explosion. There were two grenade attacks, out of which one grenade exploded on top of the Amway head office. The officers of Heingang police along with senior police personnel rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. No casualties were reported in the explosion. Dinesh Kumar Rampal, a local resident said that similar blasts have happened twice in the last few days. With a series of such events, the Amway office in Imphal has been under heavy pressure over monetary demands from the militant outfits on several occasions.

Politicos react after Court jails Jayalalithaa in graft case

New Delhi/ Mumbai, Sep 28 (ANI): Politicos reacted on Sunday after a City Special Court on Saturday convicted AIADMK chief J.Jayalalithaa guilty in Disproportionate Asset case and sentenced her with a four year rigorous jail term as well as fined her with Rs 100 crore. BJP leader Muktar Abbas Naqvi said that the court has taken a decision but Jayalalithaa can still approach the High Court. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that when the political leaders who hold any constitutional position are convicted in the corruption cases, the people tend to lose trust from the leaders.

Uddhav says BJP has no 'leader of stature'to negotiate with, politicos react

New Delhi, Sept 28 (ANI): Blaming the BJP for the break-up of their 25-year-old alliance in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena mocked the saffron party by saying that the BJP no longer has a leader of stature to negotiate with. Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray also took a swipe at the BJP's over-reliance on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charisma to win votes. Reacting over this the Congress and CPI said that BJP and Shiv Sena are worried for power and not concerned for the people of the state. Meanwhile, BJP said that the Shiv Sena had been their old partner so it does not want to indulge in blame game politics.

Differentiating reactions come in over PM Modi's UNGA speech

New Delhi, Sep 28 (ANI): Differentiating reactions came in on Sunday over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at United Nations General Assembly. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that PM should not have talked about the grievances of Pak PM over Kashmir and that he should not have made fun of G-summits. Reacting on this, BJP leader Nalin Kohli said that such remarks by Congress shows their failure during their rule. BJP's Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi applauded prime minister's speech. Meanwhile, CPI leader Atul Anjan criticized PM's topics over 'G-all groups' and also on his take on Kashmir among other things.

Thousands protest at Hong Kong as Occupy Central movement begins in China

Hong Kong, Sep 28 (ANI): Tens of thousands of people massed in the heart of Hong Kong to move forward with Occupy Central protest movement late on Saturday demanding more democracy, as tensions grew over Beijing's decision to rule out free elections in the former British colony. Thousands of people converged on the headquarters of Hong Kong's government overnight into Sunday. Leaders of the movement Occupy Central with Love and Peace said the protest marked the beginning of their plan to blockade the financial district, hoping it will escalate into one of most disruptive protests in Hong Kong for decades. The crowds swelled less than 24 hours after riot police used pepper spray to disperse protesters around government headquarters, arresting more than 60 people opposed to the Chinese government's tightening grip on the city.

Venice, Sep 28 (ANI): A scene straight out of a Hollywood production unfolded at the Venice Grand Canal as speed boats carried the glamorous wedding party of George Clooney to a glitzy bash at the seven-star Aman Hotel. The world's most famous bachelor, George Clooney, who got married to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, is now a wedded man. The wedding which turned Venice's Grand Canal into an aquatic red carpet as star-studded festivities was a private ceremony. Clooney's celebrity pals joined the couple to celebrate the ceremony in the romantic destination of Venice. Guests were being ferried to the extravaganza, billed as the party of the year, in speedboats marked with "AG", for Amal and George.

AIADMK supporters protest against Jayalalithaa's arrest, alleges false case by DMK

Bangalore/ Chennai, Sep 28 (ANI): AIADMK supporters on Sunday came out on protest in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu against the Bangalore special court's decision to sentence state Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for 4-years of jail in disproportionate assets case. Supporters shouted slogans and demanded release of Jayalalithaa. Security has been tightened as party supporters protested outside AIADMK Headquarters in Chennai. Jayalalithaa is the first state chief minister to have been ousted from the post because of a wealth case. She has been convicted of obtaining assets worth almost Rs. 66 crores through dishonest means during her first tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996. Meanwhile, AIADMK workers reached outside Bangalore jail to meet Jayalalithaa or prisoner number 7402.

Justice H L Dattu Sworn-in as Chief Justice of India

New Delhi, Sept 28 (ANI): Justice HL Dattu was sworn in as the new chief justice of India on Sunday. He was administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukherjee. Dattu is the 42nd chief justice of India and will be at the helm of the Indian judiciary till Dec 2, 2015. He succeeds Chief Justice RM Lodha who demitted office Sep 27.
