Industries in Tamil Nadu disappointed by power tariff hike

Coimbatore, Dec 15 (ANI): Industries in Tamil Nadu expressed disappointment over recent hike in power tariffs by the state government. The Tamil Nadu government increased power tariffs by approximately 15 percent on Friday. President of Electricity Consumer's Welfare Association of Tamil Nadu, Balasundaram said the hike would result in their industries becoming less competitive as their costs will increase. He added that this would result in the industrialists shifting their set-up to other states where the power supply is good and cheap. The industrialists feel that the state government took the decision to increase the power tariffs suo moto without consulting them.

Politicos react after gunman holds hostage at Lindt cafe in Australia

New Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Politicos reacted on Monday after an armed assailant kept unknown number of hostages inside the Lindt cafe in Martin Place in Sydney. BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao hoped that the people in hostage may return home safely. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that all the nations should get together to fight against terrorism. NCP leader Majid Memon said that the matter should be investigated. JD (U) leader Ali Anwar that India should become more careful of Islamic Militants.

Yogi Adityanath remains defiant, says nothing wrong in 'ghar wapsi' and should be allowed

New Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Amidst raging controversy over his statement on conversion issue, BJP MP Yogi Adityanath remained defiant and said that there is nothing wrong in 'ghar wapsi' programme and that the same should be allowed. Adityanath claimed that the opposition parties are trying to divide the society and further said that since independence, many states had massive conversion due to allurement and pressure. He said that if these people wanted to come back to their original religion, the doors for the same should be open. Lashing out at the opposition for creating ruckus over the conversion issue, the BJP MP said that they had run out of issues and did not want discussion on anything which is why they are doing this.

Schools to remain close on December 25, essay competition on 'good governance' online and voluntary:

New Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani on Monday slamming The Times of India for its inaccurate reporting said that all the CBSE schools would remain close on December 25 and essay competition on 'good governance' is online and voluntary. She added that misreporting has been deliberated. The Times of India in its report had mentioned that the HRD ministry intends to keep all the CBSE schools open on December 25 to celebrate the birthdays of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Hindu Mahasabha leader Madan Mohan Malviya by observing 'good governance day'.

Martin Place siege: Hostages held in Sydney cafe, Islamic flag seen in window

Sydney, Dec 15 (ANI): Hostages have been held inside a central Sydney cafe in Australia on Monday where a black flag with white Arabic writing was seen in the window, raising fears of an attack linked to Islamic militants. Patrons were seen inside a cafe standing with their hands pressed against the windows. A black and white flag similar to those used by Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria was also visible. Part of Martin Place, home to the Reserve Bank of Australia, commercial banks and close to the New South Wales (NSW) state parliament, has been cordoned off by the armed Australian police. Trains and buses have come to a halt and roads have been blocked in the area. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott called an emergency meeting of the cabinet's national security committee.

Martin Place siege: Australia PM says unknown if hostage situation politically motivated

Sydney, Dec 15 (ANI): Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Monday issued a short statement on the hostage incident in Martin place in Sydney. He said that the New South Wales police is responding to the incident well. He added that, however, it is yet not known whether the attack is politically motivated. He further stated that he had spoken to NSW Premier Mike Baird and offered him all possible Commonwealth support and assistance. Germany beat Pakistan to win Champions Trophy

Bhubaneshwar, Dec 15 (ANI): Olympic champions Germany proved too strong for Pakistan in hockey's Champions Trophy final. Goals from Christopher Wesley in the 18th minute and Florian Fuchs three minutes from time were enough to give Germany a superb 2-0 victory over Pakistan, with a sell-out crowd witnessed the Germans claim their 10th Champions Trophy Gold medal but their first since 2007. The Bronze medal contest between Australia and India ended in another medal for the World Cup winners, who overcame the host nation to take a 2-1 win. Eddie Ockenden silenced the crowd with a field goal in the 18th minute.India got back on level terms from a penalty corner on 42 minutes, Lalit Upadhyay eventually putting the ball in the back of the net. But Australia took the win when Matt Gohdes netted eight minutes from time.

Police arrest Maoist commander in Jharkhand

Latehar, Dec 15 (ANI): Police arrested a Maoist commander in Jharkhand. Acting on a tip-off, police had set up a special team to conduct raids and nabbed Santosh Kherwar, who was wanted in the eight cases. Superintendent of Police Michael Raj said police recovered live bullets, money and mobiles phones and SIM cards from the rebel. Maoists seek the violent overthrow of the Indian state but have so far not managed to spread significantly into urban areas. They have killed police and politicians and targeted government buildings and railway tracks in an insurgency that has killed thousands since the 1960s.

Manali, Dec 15 (ANI): Tourists were delighted as hill town of Himachal Pradesh received season's first snowfall. Snowfall is a boon for northern states in high altitudes as the inflow of tourists increases during snowfall which boosts the tourism industry. The snow-covered Manali city in the state ushered in a cheerful mood, just days before Christmas. Australian police surround Sydney cafe where hostages are held, says no contact with armed offender

Sydney, Dec 15 (ANI): Australian police said on Monday they had not had direct contact with any armed offender holding an undisclosed number of people hostage at a cafe in central Sydney. When asked if the police know about the motivation behind the hostage situation, Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said they are still determining it. Police said they are still determining what the flag means. New South Wales Premier Mike Baird said the public and police were being tested. Dozens of heavily armed Australian police hacve surrounded the Sydney cafe. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern for the people who are being held hostage. Modi on Monday called the incident inhuman and deeply unfortunate. He tweeted, "the incident in Sydney is disturbing. Such acts are inhuman and deeply unfortunate. I pray for everyone's safety."
