General Dalbir Singh leaves for Assam to review situation

New Delhi, Dec 27 (ANI): Army Chief General Dalbir Singh on Saturday left for Assam to take stock of the situation following the attacks by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit group) on Tuesday. General Singh had earlier on Friday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to review the security situation in Assam and stated that the operations against Bodo militants would be intensified. Earlier this week, NDFB (S) militants had killed over 80 people in the Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam.

Security stepped up along border in wake of attacks in India's northeast

Kanpur/ New Delhi/ Assam, Dec 27 (ANI): Director General (DG) of Seema Sashtra Bal (SSB) or armed border force on Friday (December 26) said they would cooperate with army and police against the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the tribal militant group that had shot dead more than 80 people in Assam this week. India has also sought help from Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh in an offensive against the militant group. Some militants may have fled to neighbouring Bhutan while their leader is believed to be in Myanmar, officials and police said, prompting calls for cooperation. Meanwhile, SSB DG B.D. Sharma said the problem was intense in the region due to open border. Meanwhile, Indian security expert Uday Bhaskar said the Bodo problem is not a new challenge for India and persisting since last 20-25 years.

Five dead in fire at Bhiwandi timber warehouse

Bhiwandi, Dec 27 (ANI): At least five people suffocated to death after a massive fire broke out at a timber warehouse in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi area during the wee hours of Saturday. According to reports, four others have been injured in the fire. The cause of the fire has not been ascertained as yet but it was brought under control by daybreak after a four-hour operation. All those died are residents of Nepal and worked as labourers. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of three is reported to be serious. Further details are awaited in the matter.

New Delhi records first swine flu death

Ghaziabad /New Delhi, Dec 27 (ANI): Indian capital New Delhi recorded its first swine flu death. The deceased identified as Sheel Goel, resident of East Model Town in Ghaziabad was admitted to the ICU of Ganga Ram Hospital in a serious condition on December 21. She was tested positive for swine flu. She was earlier being treated in a local hospital in Ghaziabad. The authorities claimed that the victim had come from South Africa few days before her death. However, the family denied any abroad visit and said the victim didn’t even have a passport.

'Dabbawalas' wield broom on Mumbai streets as part of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'

Mumbai, Dec 26 (ANI): World renowned 'dabbawalas' (lunch box carriers) of Mumbai on Friday wielded brooms to sweep streets after Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated them to join 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'. The 'dabbawalas' are city's lifeline as the team of around 5000 people supply food to around 200,000 office goers every day. They carry hot food in lunch boxes from the houses of Mumbai residents in the morning and deliver them at their workplace. A group of lunch box carriers assembled at Lower Parel area and swept the streets and footpaths with a promise to involve their customers also in this campaign. The dabbawalas, world-famous for their efficiency, co-ordination and hygiene, said they would do their best to ensure cleanliness around.
