Indian stock markets end lower as India-US trade deal stalls; Sensex down 585 points, Nifty 203 points

Sensex settled at 80,599.91, down 585.67 points or 0.72 per cent. The 30-share index started the session in negative territory at 81,074.41 against last session's closing of 81.185.58, following the tariff threat by US. The index further extended the falling momentum amid overall selling pressure-especially in Pharma and IT sector. The index touched intra-day low at 80,495.57.

Indian stock market defies US tariffs threat; settles slightly lower

Sensex ended the session at 81,185.58, down 296.28 points or 0.36 per cent. The 30-share index opened the trading with a significant fall at 80,695.50 against the last session's closing of 81,481.86. The index showed some resiliency, erasing early gains and returning in green in the afternoon, hitting an intraday high at 81,803.27 amid buying in the consumer sector. However, it did not hold up the momentum in the closing hour due to a monthly expiry day.
