Arjun Kapoor becomes the ambassador of Earth Hour 2014

Mumbai, March 26 (ANI): Bollywood actor, Arjun Kapoor, has been chosen as the national brand ambassador of Earth Hour 2014 to endorsed the cause and urged individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. Kapoor spoke in detail about his association with the cause and invited citizens of the country to come forward and show their support for the campaign. Feeling proud to be part of the event, he said that everyone should support policies that balance development and environmental concerns. Earth hour is the environmental campaign that enables individuals, organisations, governments and groups to come together and fight for environmental concerns. Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organised by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) and engages a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues. The event is scheduled to be held on March 29, Saturday between 8:30 - 9:30 PM.

Congress to release manifesto today, politicos react

New Delhi, Mar 26 (ANI): The Congress party will release its election manifesto on Wednesday which will also reinforce its commitment to welfare measures reflecting the party's thrust on inclusive development. Speaking on the same, expelled JD (U) leader Sabir Ali on Wednesday said that it is Congress internal matter and he does not want to comment much on that. Further, expelled JD (U) leader Shivanand Tiwari also said that nobody takes the election manifesto seriously and it is just a ritual.

Maoist attack in Jharkhand injures security personnel

Garhwa /Jhargram, Mar 26 (ANI): An attack by Maoists in Jharkhand injured one security personnel of Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) during an encounter in Garhwa district of the state. In the firing took place in village Dhurki. Meanwhile, in Jhargram town of West Bengal, a large cache of arms were seized by the CRPF and a Maoist was arrested. The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of millions of landless tribal people. Apart from prisoner releases, the Maoists have also demanded an end to tourism in parts of the state where many tribes exist. Equipped with automatic weapons, shoulder rocket launchers, mines and explosives, Maoists want to cripple economic activity.

Muzaffarnagar riots: SC says UP government failed to protect rights of people

New Delhi, Mar 26 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the Uttar Pradesh government had failed to protect the fundamental rights of people in Muzaffarnagar, where nearly 60 people were killed in riots last year. The court also said that there is no need for a CBI or a court-monitored probe into the Muzaffarnagar riots "at this juncture". The apex court also pulled up the Central and State intelligence agencies for not alerting the Uttar Pradesh government on the impending riots.

Maoists spread threat in Bihar, ask people to boycott polls

Jamui, Mar 26 (ANI): As India prepares for the upcoming parliamentary polls that are just two weeks away, Maoists in Bihar are spreading threat by pasting posters in Jamui district, asking villagers to boycott Lok Sabha elections or else face consequences. Rebels belonging to Communist Party of India (Maoists) put up posters in many villages of the Jamui district on Tuesday. Villagers in the district said they feel threatened after they read the posters put up by Maoists and are not sure of voting as they are afraid of the consequences. However, the Superintendent of Police of Jamui, Jitendra Rana said the police are alert and assured that the general elections will take place peacefully.

Cricket associations respect SC's decision on BCCI President

Mumbai / Visakhapatnam, Mar 26 (ANI): Cricket associations of different states have said that they respect the Supreme Court's direction on BCCI chief N. Srinivasan and hope that he will take an appropriate step. The top court asked him to step down to ensure a fair probe in a betting case during last year's Indian Premier League (IPL), in which his son-in-law has been indicted. Commenting on the issue, the president of Andhra Pradesh Cricket Association, D. V. Subba Rao, said Srinivasan will take court's decision in right spirit and act accordingly. Meanwhile, former chairman of IPL, Rajiv Shukla, refused to comment on the issue.
