Bhutan's King and Queen witnesses 'Ganga Aarti' in Varanasi

Varanasi, Oct 10 (ANI): Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and his wife Jetsun Pema visited the holy town of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to witness the famous 'Ganga Aarti' on the at Dashashwamedh ghat of River Ganges. Earlier on Wednesday, Wangchuck and his wife Pema planted a Bodhi sapling in the Sarnath temple of Varanasi and subsequently held prayers along with the Buddhist monks. Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema landed in India on Sunday and proceeded to pray at the Buddhist shrine of Mahabodhi Temple complex in Bodh Gaya, where Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. A group of delegates from Bhutan also accompanied the royal couple.

Hudhud cyclone to get severe from 11th Oct, will cross Vizag coast on 12th Oct: MeT Department

Vishakapatnam, Oct 10 (ANI): Visakhapatnam MeT Department official Radheshyam on Friday said that the Hudhud cyclone is now 610 km southeast of Vizag and is to get severe from 11th October. He said that the cyclone will cross coast around Vizag on 12th of this month. He further said that all the coasts are warned of the cyclonic affect and fishermen are advised to stay away from the coasts and people living in low lying areas are also advised to evacuate.

Lanterns dedicated to martyred soldiers lit up sky as Varanasi observes Akashdeep

Varanasi, Oct 10 (ANI): People from all walks of life, particularly from armed forces, gathered on the banks of River Ganges in holy city of Varanasi to observe Akashdeep (skylight) to commemorate soldier deaths by hoisting lit lanterns. Serving and retired personnel of defence and paramilitary forces joined hands with the residents to mark this ritual which is observed in the Hindu month of Karthik every year. The lanterns would be lit throughout the month to honour soldiers, who laid down their lives in service of motherland since independence in 1947. Indian Army Officer, Brigadier Virendra Singh, hoped that it would inspire people for the service to the motherlands. The ritual dates back to the ancient rimes, when it was observed to honour the sacrifices of the dead soldiers in the epic Mahabharata war

India's oldest unmarried woman aims for Guinness World Record

Thrissur, Oct 10 (ANI): Age does not deter Kunjannam of Kerala from aiming high. At 111, she is helping her family members browse through the photographs and certificates that will assist establish her exact age so that she finds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the oldest surviving unmarried woman on earth. A resident of Thrissur district of Kerala, Kunjannam's name and age is recorded in the church where she was baptized. The baptism records show her date of birth as May 05, 1903, which is issued by Rosary Church at Eranellur village, established in 1861.
