Women supporters of Awami League protest against Khalida Zia

Dhaka, Jan 1 (ANI): Women supporters of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League Party protested against the opposition leader, Begum Khalida Zia, saying that she triggers violence in the country. The irate protesters shouted slogans against Zia and burnt her effigy in Dhaka. A Member of Parliament from the ruling party, Sahida Tareq Dipti, said that the protest was organized to condemn Khalida Zia’s action in public. Violence has gripped the country as Hasina and her ruling Awami League pressed ahead with vote. The opposition says it will not take part in the vote unless an interim government oversees it and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina steps down.

India welcomes 2014 with festivities

Goa/ Karnataka/ Gujarat, Jan 1 (ANI): After an eventful year, India welcomed 2014 with celebrations, music and food festivals. Thousands of foreign tourists thronged India's party capital, Goa, which boasts colonial Portuguese charm, sun-kissed beaches and great seafood. The New Year parties arranged in various hotels and clubs, besides on the off-shore casinos received overwhelming response from the tourists visiting the state. A resident of Bangalore, Anjali, wished for a peaceful 2014. In Ahmedabad, people welcomed the New Year with cultural programs and traditional dance performances. India awaits response from US over diplomatic spat

New Delhi, Jan 1 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that response from the US over dropping of criminal charges against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragde was awaited but owing to the holiday season, things were delayed. MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that the diplomatic channels in the United States as well as in India were trying to secure full diplomatic immunity for Khobragade by shifting her to its UN mission in New York, although such a move needs the US State Department approval. Akbaruddin told mediapersons that India was sharing every bit of information with their counterparts in the United States and the discussions were in progress.

India hopes for early resolution of legal tussle of GMR group with Maldivian government

New Delhi, Jan 1 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs has hoped for a resolution of issues between infrastructure firm, GMR and Maldivian government, with both at loggerheads over the Male airport issue. The new President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom would visit India from January 01 to 04. President Gayoom would be accompanied by a high level delegation. GMR, a subsidiary of Bangalore-based GMR Infrastructure limited has been given seven days to leave the Indian Ocean island chain. In 2012, Maldives cancelled its biggest foreign investment project, a $511 million deal with Indian firm GMR Group to develop its international airport, raising questions over the future of foreign investment in the islands renowned for luxury resorts. MEA spokesperson, Syed Akbaruddin said that it was important for both GMR and the government of Maldives to resolve their issues. Akbaruddin added that Maldives and India were committed for improving their bilateral relations.
