Cannot leave legacy of debt for future generation: Venkaiah Naidu defending general budget Part - 1

Bangalore, July 13 (ANI): Defending the general budget 2014-15, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said that the government cannot leave the legacy of debt for the future generation. Naidu said that the government had to take such harsh reforms to correct the populist reforms of the Congress government. Further, he also said that PM Narendra Modi is not the leader of both the houses of Parliament in the reconstituted Parliamentary party but holds the position only in Lok Sabha.

Five more infants die at Malda hospital, toll reaches 12

Malda, July 13 (ANI): In a worsening situation at the Malda Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, five more infant deaths have been reported on Sunday. This comes less than a day after as many as seven newborn died at the hospital in 24 hours time. The government hospital had been in the news for the death of 23 infants due to an unspecified illness in June. Crib deaths is a serious issue haunting the West Bengal government since the past few years.

Palestinians clash with Israeli troops in the West Bank

Hebron/ Bethlehem, July 13 (ANI): Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli military forces in the West Bank cities of Bethlehem and Hebron early Sunday morning in protest against an Israeli offensive in Gaza. Israeli troops responded with stun grenades, tear gas and live fire. In Hebron, seven Palestinians were injured from live fire. Another 20 were injured by rubber bullets. The clashes took place as Israel continued a five-day offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza.

Mixed reactions flow as NCP Chief refuses to oppose appointment of Nripendra Misra

New Delhi, July 13 (ANI): Political leaders on Sunday gave mixed reactions as NCP Chief Sharad Pawar refused to oppose the appointment of Nripendra Misra as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister. Congress leader Rashid Alvi casually said that Sharad Pawar is capable of taking decisions for his party. CPI leader Atul Anjan said that Sharad Pawar is not concerned about the problems prevailing in the country but other unimportant issues. Meanwhile, NCP leader Nawab Malik clarified his party's decision saying that this controversy regarding Nripendra Misra's appointment is useless.

Modi to attend BRICS summit in Brazil

New Delhi, July 13 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave on Sunday to attend the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) summit in Brazil. The Summit's theme is, "Inclusive Growth; Sustainable Development", and is expected to enable shaping up of the post-2015 Development Agenda being discussed in the United Nations. The Prime Minister said in a statement that India attaches high importance to the BRICS forum for promoting global economic growth, peace and stability. He added that he looks at the BRICS Summit as an opportunity to discuss how India can contribute to international efforts to address regional crises, address security threats and restore a climate of peace and stability in the world.

FIFA World Cup 2014: No silver lining for Brazil Fans

Brazil, July 13 (ANI): Brazil signed off from their home World Cup to a cacophony of boos as the defensive errors that crushed their bid for a sixth title resurfaced in a shoddy 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the third-place playoff match. Despite Brazil suffering a massive defeat in the semi-final to Germany, the "FIFA Fan Fest" on Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana beach was packed with soccer fans eager to see the host nation score some goals and claim some pride back. The World Cup final between Argentina and Germany will take place in Rio's Maracana Stadium on Sunday.

Artist creates sand sculpture in Odisha to honour FIFA World Cup

Puri, July 13 (ANI): As the final of FIFA World Cup 2014 has approached, famed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a representative sand sculpture of the cup at a beach in Puri city of Odisha. Pattnaik created an eight feet high sand sculpture of the World Cup trophy along with the national flags of the two finalists and the faces of two captains, Lionel Messi of Argentina and Philipp Lahm of Germany, with a message "Goal for Gold Cup". The FIFA World Cup final will be played on July 13 between Argentina and Germany.

More Indian nurses stranded in Iraq arrive home

Kochi, July 13 (ANI): Another batch of 29 Indian nurses, who were caught up fighting in Iraq, arrived home in Kochi city of Kerala and were welcomed by their family members at the airport. The nurses were working in four different hospitals in and around places of Diyala. The nurses had been worried as the hospital authorities were not returning their passports but they got it later after government's intervention. India's foreign ministry made ways for safe return of the stranded Indian nationals as they arranged for funds to pay off for immigration fines and return tickets.

Delhi swelters under record heat wave with no sight of monsoon

New Delhi, July 13 (ANI): Delhi is sweltering under the longest heat wave on record, triggering widespread breakdowns in the supply of electricity with no scope of monsoon in the days to come. Temperatures in the capital reached up to a maximum of 41 degrees centigrade in the past week. High temperatures, coupled with frequent power outages, have put the residents in misery. Tourism industry is badly hit as travellers prefer to visit cooler places to get some respite from the scorching heat. Meteorological Department officials attribute the delay in monsoons to the western disturbances in north India. But they are optimistic about the arrival of monsoons in the near future.
