J&K harnesses just 24 percent of hydropower potential; capacity set to double by 2028

Jammu and Kashmir has tapped only 3,540 MW—about 24 per cent—of its identified hydropower potential of 14,867 MW, the Economic Survey 2025–26 tabled in the Assembly reveals. With four major projects adding over 3,000 MW by 2028, the government aims to double generation capacity, strengthen transmission networks and expand renewable energy to meet rising demand and enable surplus power exports.
