A major arms consignment has been busted by the special cell of Delhi Police ahead of Independence Day, reports Times of India. The consignment included pistols and carbines which were being taken by two men hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Shamli.

The police has identified the two men as Azim and Aas Mohammed who were bringing in 50 pistols and 50 cartridges to the national capital via train, adds the report.

The arrests have been confirmed by DCP of Special Cell Sanjeev Kumar who said that raids are being conducted across Delhi to find the receivers of the consignment.

The police has not denied the possibility of a terror angle to the incident and said that they will only be able to comment on it once they nab the receivers of the assignment.

A few days back, security agencies had foiled another terror attack by arresting a Kashmiri youth in Jammu on August 5 when he was travelling in a Delhi-bound train. The police had seized eight hand grenades and a sum of Rs 60,850 from him. The man named Arfan Wani is a resident of Pulwama's Awantipora.

Earlier last month, intelligence agencies had warned that Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed could target Delhi ahead of Independence day on August 15, while Parliament could become the target of two Khalistani operatives.

The information on Jaish-e-Mohammed's plans to attack Delhi was given out by the group's members Syed Muneer-ul-Hassan Qadri, Ashiq Baba and Tariq Ahmad Dar, who are in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for the Nagrota army camp attack in 2016.

The arrested members of the group had said that the attack could take place in crowded areas in the city and was Jaish-e-Mohammed's way of avenging the death of Burhan Wani and other commanders. They also added that these attackers were mostly Kashmiri youths who had been sent to the capital and asked to pose as plumbers and other kinds of workers.
