Jaipur police have arrested the son of a BJP leader for running his SUV over four labourers sleeping on the pavement in the Rajasthan capital on Friday night.

The BJP leader's son was handed over to the police by passers-by who were present at the spot.

A local police officer told NDTV that four people were left injured and admitted to a hospital after the accident. He further said that two of the four died on Saturday morning.

Police have identified the accused as Bharat Bhushan Meena. The 35-year-old is said to have been under the influence of alcohol when he ran over his vehicle on the labourers. Police said that the alcohol in his blood was found to be nine times the legal limit.

Meena was accompanied by his friends who were also drunk when their SUV hit the pavement under a flyover near Jaipur's Gandhi Nagar railway station. Meena, who was behind the steering wheel accelerated his SUV in an effort to flee from the spot and in doing so, lost control crushing the sleeping labourers.

Meena has been charged with attempt to murder and rash driving under the influence of alcohol by the Jaipur police.

The SUV involved in the accident is said to be registered in the name of BJP Kisan Morcha leader Badri Narayan Meena, the accused's father. It is also being reported that a footage has highlighted that the SUV had posters of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's Gaurav Yatra on the rear windscreen.
