Politicos offer their condolences over the demise of legendary cartoonist RK Laxman

New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): Politicos on Tuesday mourned the death of eminent cartoonist RK Laxman, whose "You Said It" cartoon featuring the 'Common Man' lampooned India's powerful for half a century. Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that it is a great loss to the country. Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar also expressed his grief over the demise of Laxman. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore and BJD leader Jay Panda also expressed similar sentiments. According to media reports, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will attend the last rites of Laxman, who will be accorded the state funeral in Pune. Laxman who was ill from two weeks, died of multi-organ failure at a private hospital in Pune.

Experts call China's red flag to India's entry into NSG 'fear from their side'

New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): Indian experts on Chinese Affairs on Tuesday said that China's red flag to India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group is 'the fear from their side'. China on Monday reacted coldly to strong indications that the United States would back India for a membership of the NSG. The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying cautioned that any such move "requires very careful consideration from all member countries". Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Sunday said President Obama has assured him of strong US efforts in support of India's full membership of the four international export control regimes at the earliest, and indication of US backing for NSG membership.

Five die after car falls into deep gorge in Shimla

Shimla, Jan 27 (ANI): Five tourists died in Shimla city of Himachal Pradesh after their car fell into a gorge. The tourists travelling in Swift Desire, coming from Punjab en route to Shimla, fell into nearly a 700-feet deep gorge. Additional Superintendent of Police, BD Negi said they received information about the accident and rushed to the spot immediately. He said investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind the accident.

Pune/ Mumbai/ New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): Indian cartoonists mourned the death of eminent cartoonist RK Laxman, whose "You Said It" cartoon featuring the 'Common Man' lampooned India's powerful for half a century. Laxman had been ill for two weeks and died of multi-organ failure at a private hospital in Pune city where he lived. Laxman's daughter-in-law Usha said that his body would be taken to Mumbai city to the Common Man statue where his admirers could pay their last respects. Indian cartoonist, Sudhir Tailang said that Laxman's demise was a major loss to the cartooning world. Another Indian cartoonist, Aseem Trivedi remembered Laxman for voicing issues faced by the common man through his cartoons.

Ten killed, at least 21 injured in Greek fighter plane crash in Spain

Spain, Jan 27 (ANI): Eight French nationals and two Greeks were killed and at least 21 people injured when a Greek fighter plane crashed during NATO training in Spain, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said. The F-16 crashed at about 3:20 PM shortly after taking off at a training centre in Albacete, 260 km (160 miles) southeast of the capital Madrid. The Greek fighter jet was carrying out a NATO training exercise at the Spanish base but something went wrong during the take-off. "The plane lost power, crashing into the parking area for planes, crashing into various planes that were parked there," the defence ministry said in a statement. Two pilots on board were among the dead and other pilots and mechanics were underneath the plane in the parking area, according to Spanish media reports. A witness said that he saw a big blaze flying horizontally.

Kiran Bedi slams AAP for objecting to seating arrangement

New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kiran Bedi on Monday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for raising objections about her seating arrangement at the Republic Day celebrations earlier today. The former IPS officer was also miffed at the AAP for using her pictures in the party's new posters without her permission. According to reports, the AAP had raised questions about Bedi's front row seat at the Republic Day function. The party was also reportedly upset over the non-invitation to its chief Arvind Kejriwal to witness the Republic Day parade.

Sensex hits all time high, Market Expert says Obamas visit to India very productive

Mumbai, Jan 27 (ANI): As the S&P BSE Sensex opened on a positive note for eighth straight session led by gains in capital goods, auto and power sectors, Market Expert Sunil Shah credited the development to US President Barack Obama’s visit to India. Shah said that Obama’s visit to India is very productive and that the sentiments have been positive as the market us trading above 100 points. Capital goods and infrastructure stocks are likely to be in action following India and the US moved ahead towards commercial nuclear cooperation. At 9:40AM, the 30-share Sensex was up 95 points at 29,374 and the 50-share Nifty was up 9 points at 8,844. However, Shah advised the investors to not indulge in trading immediately and have some patience.

Leopard mauls six people in Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri, Jan 27 (ANI): A stray leopard mauled six people in West Bengal when it entered a village near Bhaikunthupur forest. Forest officials said that they reached the spot as soon as they were alerted about the leopard but their efforts to tranquilise the mammal went in vain. Later, villagers thrashed the leopard to death. Its carcass was sent for postmortem.

Security tightened at Siri Fort Auditorium as US President Obama all set to address gathering

New Delhi, Jan 27 (ANI): Security has been tightened outside Siri Fort Auditorium in Delhi as US President Barack Obama is set to end his three day India visit with a speech before a select gathering. Obama is to speak on future of the bilateral ties between America and India. Speaking on "India and America: The future we can build together", Obama will take questions from the audience of at least 2,000 people, including members of the strategic affairs community and students. During the programme, Obama is also expected to meet Noble laureate Kailash Satyarthi. The event is expected to start around 10:45 AM and likely to go on for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Delhiites will have to face another day of incessant traffic jams, around south Delhi’s Siri Fort auditorium and the Ring Road around South Extension. The roads will remain closed for traffic movement according to the passage of the entourage.
