PM Modi gives'SMART' police concept at conference of DGPs and IGPs

Guwahati, Nov 30 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed a conference of DGPs and IGPs in Guwahati city of Assam. Modi said that the government should take steps to ensure the family welfare of policemen. He also gave a concept of'SMART' police saying that the policemen should be S- Sensitive and Strict, M-Modern and Mobile, A-Alert and Accountable, R-Responsive and Reliable, T-Techno savvy and Trained; thus being'SMART' overall.

IS, Al-Qaeda serious challenge for India, says DIB

Guwahati, Nov 30 (ANI): Intelligence Bureau Director Asif Ibrahim on Sunday while addressing the conference of DGPs and IGPs in Guwahati said that that Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda are a serious security threat for India. He added that the conference is also focused on the security issues of the North-East region, adding that the security scenario in North-Eastern area is fragile.

Bhopal's toxic legacy lives on, activists urge govt to address woes

Bhopal, Nov 30 (ANI): An activist working with Bhopal gas leak victims, Satinath Sarangi, said that even 30 years after the industrial disaster the government has not been able to provide the victims the necessary relief and rehabilitation. On the night of December 02, 1984, the factory owned by the US multinational Union Carbide Corp accidentally leaked cyanide gas into the air, killing thousands of largely poor Indians in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh. Thirty years later, the toxic legacy of this factory lives on, say human rights groups, as thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste remains buried underground, slowly poisoning the drinking water of more than 50,000 people and affecting their health. Sarangi, who is the founder and managing trustee of charitable Sambhavna Trust and a member of Bhopal Group for Information and Action, admits that government has not been able to provide the tragedy survivors with right treatment. Meanwhile, managing trustee of non-profit organisation, Chingari Trust, Rashida Bee, shared her experience of providing therapies and working for rehabilitation of special children born in families affected by 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy.

Workers Party of Bangladesh demands ban on Islamist party, speedy trial of war crimes

Dhaka, Nov 30 (ANI): The leaders of Workers Party of Bangladesh held a rally in Dhaka to demand ban on main Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and speedy trial of the war criminals to build a secular nation. The 1971 war of liberation, in which an estimated three million people died in nine months, is a festering wound not only for those personally affected, but also for many young Bangladeshis. Leaders and hundreds of party workers held placards and flags at the rally demanding ban on militant forces. A former leader of Bangladesh's ruling party was sentenced to death by a war crimes tribunal on November 24 in connection with atrocities committed during the country's war of independence from Pakistan. The war crimes tribunals have angered Islamists who call them a politically motivated attempt by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to persecute the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami, a key part of the opposition coalition.

Fifty people affected in separate gas leak incidents in Bhopal and Meerut

Bhopal/ Meerut, Nov 30 (ANI): Fifty people were affected in two different gas leak incidents in Bhopal and Meerut. Thirty five workers of a chemical plant in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh were affected after chlorine gas leaked in the plant at Speciality Organics Private Limited factory. The exact reason for the gas leak is not known yet. Meanwhile, in another incident in Meerut of Uttar Pradesh, gas leak at a meat packing factory affected 15 women workers. The affected women were rushed to City Hospital. Out of the 15 affected, five are said to be in critical condition. The meat packing factory, called Al Alia, is owned by former BSP leader, Shahid Akhlaq.

Northeast festival in New Delhi sends a message of national integration part - 1

New Delhi, Nov 30 (ANI): 'Insurgence to Resurgence' was the theme of the 2nd edition of the "Northeast Festival - Connecting People, Celebrating life", at the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts in New Delhi. The 4-day long cultural extravaganza was organised by Trend MMS, with support from the eight northeastern states, Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of DoNER and the Northeast Community, Delhi. Sportspersons from the northeast who won medals at the recent Commonwealth and Asian games were felicitated at the inaugural session. Leaders, policy makers and various stakeholders came together for discussion sessions on critical issues including tourism, employment, business opportunities and investment in IT sector in Northeast. Fashion designers from the region put together a vibrant show showcasing the traditional weaving patterns, rich colorful fabrics and jewelry worn by the numerous tribes of the Northeast. The audience was later treated to a wide range of musical performances by popular bands like Minutes of Decay, Mayukh Hazarika and the Brahmaputra Balladeers and Frisky Pints.
