Atleast 13 killed in an accident in Assam

Golaghat, Feb 09 (ANI): At least 13 people were killed in a major road accident in Golaghat district of Assam, when a vehicle carrying 15 passengers rammed into a stationary truck loaded with iron rods. The impact of the accident was so severe that 12 people died on the spot, while another victim succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. Most of the passengers sitting in the front of the vehicle were disfigured beyond recognition. Two survivors, who suffered injuries, were rushed to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. The accident occurred on NH 37, when the passenger vehicle was coming from Dhakuakhana in Dhemaji district. One of the survivors said the vehicle was being driven by attendant while the driver was taking rest.

Singapore President arrives in India for state visit

New Delhi, Feb 09 (ANI): Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam arrived in New Delhi for a four-day-visit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During his visit, President Yam is scheduled to meet his Indian counterpart, Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. President Yam, who is accompanied by his wife Mary Tan, will also inaugurate an exhibition at the national museum in New Delhi. He will leave the country on February 11. The close relationship shared by India and Singapore is based on convergence of economic and political interests.

Terrorism needs to be tackled with global cooperation, says President Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, Feb 09 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee said the international community needs to assert itself and tackle terrorism by taking concerted, coordinated and determined action. Addressing the sixth conference of Ambassadors and High Commissioners in New Delhi, the President recalled the horrific killings of innocent hostages in Syria, the attack on the media in Paris and the tragic killing of school children and their teachers in Peshawar, Pakistan. Calling terrorism an industry of evil, Mukherjee said that it was not just a threat to peace and security but an attack on humanity as a whole and civilization. Mukherjee said India demonstrated dynamism and bold leadership by inviting leaders of SAARC countries to attend the swearing-in of the new government in May last year.
