Young Shreyas Iyer missed a magnificent century by four runs but that was enough for Delhi Daredevils to edge past Gujarat Lions by two wickets in an inconsequential Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Green Park Stadium here on Wednesday. If Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson demolished the Gujarat Lions in their away encounter at the Ferozeshah Kotla in Delhi last Thursday, it was Iyer, who almost single-handedly tamed the Lions in their own den with a 57-ball 96, his highest IPL score. Languishing at the bottom of the IPL standings and already out of contention for the play-offs, both the sides had nothing to lose in the contest. With the win, Delhi rose to sixth while Gujarat are at the penultimate spot in the eight-team table. Chasing a mammoth 196, Delhi lost half their side for 105 runs before Iyer and Australian Pat Cummins' cameo (24 of 13 balls) guided the visitors to the win.

Kings XI Punjab stayed in contention in the race for playoffs with an upset victory over the second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders even as its top batsman Chris Lynn's 52-ball 84 went up in smoke in an Indian Premier League (IPL) game here on Tuesday. Punjab now have 12 points from the same number of matches and play Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant away. KKR, on the other hand, remained second despite the defeat with 16 points from 13 outings. They have already made the knockout stages. Lynn struck eight fours and three sixes but wickets fell around him as the men in purple failed to gun down a par target of 168 set by the hosts batting first at the IS Bindra Stadium here. Rahul Tewatia (2/18) and Mohit Sharma (2/24) were the best bowlers for Punjab with the latter bowling a fantastic penultimate over leaking just nine runs and taking the wicket of out-of-form Yusuf Pathan (2).

Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad strengthened their hold on the fourth and final play-offs spot of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they thumped top-placed Mumbai Indians by seven wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Monday. Playing their final home game of the league stage, Hyderabad restricted Mumbai to 138/7 in 20 overs, before Shikhar Dhawan (62 not out off 46 deliveries) and Moises Henriques (44 off 35) shared a 91-run stand for the second wicket to steer them home with 1.4 overs to spare. Following this win, Hyderabad, having 15 points from 13 games, eliminated Delhi Daredevils (eight points from 11 games) from the race to the play-offs. But Hyderabad's place in the knock-outs are not confirmed, as fifth-placed Kings XI Punjab (10 points from 11 matches) can still qualify for the play-offs. Only Mumbai have sealed their berth in the play-offs, while Kolkata Knight Riders (16 points from 12 matches) and Rising Pune Supergiant (16 points from 12 matches) are strong contenders.

Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine's big hitting helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) sweep aside out-of-sorts Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets in a rain-interrupted Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday. It was a surprise when Narine came out to open the batting with the fit-again Lynn instead of in-form skipper Gautam Gambhir but the West Indian who has been doing the job at the top of the order for KKR this season vindicated the team management's faith in him. Pursuing RCB's 158/4, KKR romped home with 159/4 in 15.1 overs riding on a 105-run stand by Narine (54; 17b 6x4 4x6) and Lynn (50; 22b 5x4 4x6) in just 6.1 overs at a run rate of 17.02. Narine registered the fastest half-century in the IPL, reaching the 50-run-mark in just 15 balls. KKR are now second in the points table with 16 points from 12 outings. They play Kings XI Punjab in Mohali before ending the league engagements at home against already-qualified Mumbai Indians.
