Oscars 2016: Nominees urged to skip $55,000 Israel swag bag trip

Oscar-nominated celebrities were urged to skip a $55,000 (£39,500) trip to Israel offered as part of an awards gift bag. Two US- based groups campaigning for an end to Israels occupation of the Palestinian Territories made the plea in a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times that appeared five days before the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. Oscars 2016: The Revenant and DiCaprio hot favourites for top awards

Leonardo DiCaprio will finally take home the best actor Oscar on 28 February, according to Las Vegas bookmaker Ben Eckstein. Eckstein, who has a nationally syndicated odds column and publishes betting odds on his website AmericasLine.com, has DiCaprio at 1/50 for his role as a fur trapper bent on revenge in The Revenant. The best picture race, though, is tighter, with Alejandro Inarritus dark drama competing against Tom McCarthys journalism tale Spotlight, with financial farce The Big Short in third place. Big Lebowski house: Inside the architectural artwork

The owner of a luxury house featured most notably in the 1998 film comedy The Big Lebowski, is donating it to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) with the hope that people will build more architecturally creative homes. James Goldstein, owner of the Sheats Goldstein residence nestled in the hills above Los Angeles, has promised to leave the unique building, along with its gardens, art pieces and his fashion collection, to the museum so that it will one day be open to the public. Zero Days: Director says US government secrecy trend appalling

The US government developed a cyberwar capacity to cripple Irans military defences, power plants and other infrastructure in case diplomatic attempts to curtail its nuclear programme failed, a documentary film shown in Berlin says. The film Zero Days by veteran documentary maker Alex Gibney, being shown in competition for the Berlin International Film Festivals top Golden Bear prize, says the USs National Security Agency (NSA) developed a cyberwar programme dubbed Nitro Zeus that it hoped would bring Iran to its knees in the event of hostilities.
