Australia find themselves in a must-win situation going into their final Group A match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, and that must-win match just happens to be against their biggest rivals England.

While England have already qualified for the semifinals, depending on how this match at Edgbaston goes, they will be joined by either Australia or Bangladesh.

If Bangladesh are to make it to the semifinals, they need Australia to pick up anything but a win. If Australia are to qualify for the final four, they must beat England on Saturday.

The two games that Australia have played so far have been the frustrating kind, with both of those games – against New Zealand and Bangladesh – ending in washouts.

In a way, though, Australia's two points from two matches – earned by getting a point each from the two abandoned games – are about right, considering they would have, most likely, lost to the Kiwis in their opening match and would have definitely beaten Bangladesh in their second.

While the completion of those matches would have given Australia a chance to give them something on the net run rate, with it opening up another possible qualification scenario, Steve Smith's team can do nothing now, but win this game.

And the plan to win this game, according to Australia captain Smith, is going to be by taking advantage of England's "predictability" in tactics.

"I'd say they're quite predictable with the way they play," Smith said. "They don't like to change a lot so from our aspect that's something we can play on.

"Their plans, the way they structure their innings and the way their bowlers are used and what the bowlers do. The bowlers have a set of skills that we know quite well and we know what they are going to do.

"So you're halfway through the battle, if that makes sense."

With that pre-match barb thrown at England by Smith, it will be interesting to see how the hosts respond. At the end of the day, though, England with their "predictable" but fantastic brand of cricket have reached the semifinals without breaking a sweat, while Australia are in a win-or-go-home position.

Nothing would make England happier than to be the team to knock Australia out of the Champions Trophy.

"They're always big games, regardless of what's on the line," England captain Eoin Morgan said. "If we're looking to win this tournament and go beyond it and win the 2019 World Cup, we need to be beating the best sides in the world, and Australia are one of them.

"There's always something more on it. I haven't played in Ashes cricket, and certainly there are other guys like that in the changing room. From that side of things, if you never get to play in an Ashes game, this is the closest you will ever get."
