A drunk man created a ruckus near the Indira Gandhi International airport on Thursday night by jumping out of a moving cab and snatching the pistol of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer.

The incident happened near the main checking point around 300 metres from Terminal 3 of the IGI airport when CISF commandos fired warning shots before overpowering and arresting the man, identified as 27-year-old Shankar, a resident of Sangam Vihar in south Delhi.

The security scare led to the closure of the main road to the airport.

According to CISF officials, the incident happened close to midnight, when security men deployed at the checkpoint saw a vehicle approaching at a high speed.

After the vehicle was signalled to stop, they saw a man sitting in the front seat beating up the driver. The driver then stepped out of the vehicle and the suspect then shifted to the driver's seat and tried to drive away.

On seeing this, the commandos approached the car and asked the man to come out of the car. However, the man started the car and tried to take a u-turn and flee.

A CISF officer then snatched the ignition keys from the moving car which brought it to a halt.

The suspect then got out of the car and got into a physical fight with the commandos and snatched a pistol from one of them and tried to run away with it. The commandos then fired a shot at the ground and once in the air to scare him, prompting him to drop the pistol and surrender.

The police reached the spot and arrested Shankar and it was later revealed that he was involved in a case of attempted culpable homicide in the past.

Shankar also revealed to the police that he was trying to carjack the cab.
