'The Winds of Winter' release date might come as a surprise to the fansReuters

With the release of "Game of Thrones" season 5 just a few days to go, fans of the show must be very eager to know the release date of "The Winds of Winter" and Author George RR Martin has come up with new details about his upcoming novel.

After revealing that he cancelled many of his interviews and convention shows, the New Mexican writer has stated that he is trying hard to finish the sixth instalment of "A Song of Ice and Fire" before "Game of Thrones" season 6.

"I wish it was out now. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I cancelled two convention appearances, I'm turning down a lot more interviews—anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Although the author did not mention a specific time for the release of his next novel, his statement has triggered speculations that the book would see the light of day in 2016.

Meanwhile, the author teased that a big twist is coming to major characters' lives and it could drive "readers crazy". He explained that it will be a shocking and unexpected twist which will "grow out of characters". According to him, it is  "very organic and natural" and "makes sense" with the involvement of three to four characters.

However, Martin revealed that he has not yet decided on writing the Book in that direction and it will not have an impact on "Game of Thrones" as the makers have already taken a couple of decisions that will "preclude it".

"A Song of Ice and Fire" author even stated that he regrets for not planning "The Winds of Winter" right after finishing his last novel, "A Dance with Dragons".

"I was red hot on the book and I put it aside for six months" he says. "I was so into it. I was pushing so hard that I was writing very well. I should have just gone on from there, because I was so into it and it was moving so fast then. But I didn't because I had to switch gears into the editing phase and then the book tour. The iron does cool off, for me especially," he said.

In the meantime, he recently released another chapter of his upcoming book and it revolves around Sansa Stark, which can be read here.
