Cruelty towards animals is nothing new. From gruesome stories of whipping a monkey to shooting bullets into the head of a pit bull are incidents that a few of us have expressed our disgust and anger against.

But what seems to have worsened the situation is the escalating usage of social media to showcase and share the torture depicted on the animals. While few to take to sharing videos of torturing their pets and neighbourhood animals, others seem to have come up with the new practice of going into the territories of the wild animals and test their cruelty on them.

A video that surfaced on the social media on May 7 has yet again waged a war of anger and disgust against such cruelty. The video which was shot in Delhi shows a monkey being lured with food, which later leads to the animal being injured.

The animal was eating out of a packet of snacks which might have been offered by visitors when yet another packet of snacks was tossed at it. As the monkey tried to open the packet, a bomb inside the packet exploded, leaving the monkey with a grave injury on its left hand.

The video, which has already got over 1,40,000 views on social networking sites and has been shared by almost 9,000 people, has invited an outrage amongst animals lovers and activists.

"It completely depends on us as to how we are going to change it. Such people have no ounce of guilt in them. Even the person who shot the video is as much as guilty as the one who gave the packet of food to the monkey," Shreeram VN, a volunteer in Avian and Reptile Rehabilitation Trust (ARRT) told International Business Times, India.

For a few others, it was an act of cruelty towards Hanuman Ji. "This is hypocrisy in its best attire. On one hand you celebrate Hanuman Jayanti and raise slogans for him and then you take to hurting monkeys," said a resident of Bengaluru, who chose to remain anonymous.

"This is totally wrong. It doesn't matter what religion we are from. We should respect all religions and respect all animals. Sorry from that person who did that disgusting thing," said another social media user.

Others even took to using cuss words to express their anger.
