The storyline of upcoming movie Varanasi has been leaked on social media after the interviews of SS Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran.
SS Rajamouli, Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran gave interviews to a couple of media house, in which they spoke about the plot and characters of Varanasi. Post these interviews, a plotline has been doing rounds on social media. The director said that about 25 minutes of the movie is set in mythological period. The movie is set in different world.
If we are to go by posts on social media, the story of Varanasi is about "Rudhra (Mahesh Babu), a fierce devotee of Lord Shiva, who is chosen for a secret mission that transcends time itself. Tasked with retrieving a powerful ancient cosmic artefact hidden across timelines, Rudhra travels through different eras to secure it before it falls into the wrong hands."
"But his journey takes a dangerous turn when he realizes he is not alone. A ruthless mastermind, driven by the thirst for absolute global domination, is also chasing the same artefact. As timelines collide and reality begins to fracture, Rudhra must outwit his enemy and protect the balance of the universe before irreversible chaos unfolds."

Talking about taking inspiration from Ramayana, SS Rajamouli said, "Every film I make carries the soul of the epics of Rama, but with #Varanasi, I was finally able to lift an actual episode straight from the Ramayana and bring it alive on screen. Yet, the audience doesn't need to come armed with knowledge. That burden is on me, not on them. My responsibility as a storyteller is to ensure that no one feels lost, no one feels exhausted trying to "understand" the film."
SS Rajamouli added, "You may not know the entire story of Rama and that's perfectly fine. Cinema is not about memorizing texts, it's about feeling emotions. If you feel the fear, the devotion, the conflict, and the triumph of the characters, you will understand everything that truly matters. When the emotions land, the story reveals itself."
Talking about characterisation of the movie, SS Rajamouli said, "In Varanasi, the character relationships that matter the most are between a father and son and the dynamic between the film's protagonist Rudra and a mysterious thief named Mandakini."
