Anushka Shetty's "Rudhramadevi" (Rudramadevi) has not only overtaken Aishwarya Rai's "Jazbaa" at the US box office in the first weekend, but also beaten the 10 day collection records of "Puli" and "Singh Is Bliing".
"Rudhramadevi" received superb response in premiere shows on Thursday night. The film released in over 135 cinema halls in the country on Friday. Despite clashing with "Jazbaa", "Puli" and "Singh Is Bliing", the movie registered good opening at the US box office and showed decent growth on Saturday and Sunday.
The Gunasekhar-directed historical movie "Rudhramadevi" has collected $7,19,529 (Rs 4.66 crore) at the US box office in the first weekend. Its breakup is $126,276 in Thursday premiere, $179,696 on Friday, $252,239 on Saturday and $161,318 on Sunday. Its per-screen average collection stands at $5329. As per its present trends, the film is expected to cross the mark of $1 million in the first week.
This week's another new Indian release "Jazbaa, which marks the comeback of Aishwarya Rai, also has done well, but its business is not up to the level of "Rudhramadevi". The Sanjay Gupta-directed film has collected $1,77,310 (Rs 1.14 crore) from 113 screens at the US box office in its opening weekend. Its per-screen average stands at $1569, which is little more than ¼ of the average of the Anushka starrer.
"Singh Is Bliing" and "Puli" were released in 140 and 89 screens respectively in the country on 2 October. Akshay Kumar's Bollywood film and Vijay Tamil movie have grossed $5,12,388 (Rs 3.31 crore) and $2,09,251 (Rs 1.35 crore) at the US box office in 10 days. Their business looks very lower than "Rudhramadevi".
However, "Rudhramadevi" has topped the US business chart for Indian movies, beating all these movies. The Anushka Shetty starrer has smashed the first weekend record of "Bhale Bhale Magadivoi". It has become the fifth highest grosser Telugu film in opening weekend in 2015.
