Telangana bans Uber cab services after Delhi rape case

Hyderabad, Dec 10 (ANI): Telangana on Wednesday banned the US-based Uber cab services, days after Delhi rape case by a driver employed with the company. The move came after India ordered state governments to halt the operations of all unregistered, web-based taxi companies on Tuesday. In state capital Hyderabad, police officials and the transport authority are stopping taxis and checking them. The move in India was followed by separate government and court actions against Uber in Thailand, Spain and the United States on a variety of issues. A representative for Uber said the company had not been officially notified of any ban in New Delhi and would issue a statement. It was still possible to hail an Uber taxi in Delhi using the company's smartphone application.

Home Minister assured that our suggestions will be taken into consideration: AAP on women safety

New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): AAP leader Manish Sisodia on Wednesday after meeting Home Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue of security of women in Delhi said that in last few months, the central government has not done anything for the safety of Delhi. He added that Aam Aadmi Party suggested many measures which could make Delhi safer for women. He further stated that they also appealed Singh to look into the matter of forceful religion conversion. AAP leader Dharamvir Gandhi said that Singh assured them that he will think upon the suggestions.

Politicos react to 'unparliamentary remarks' by TMC's Kalyan Banerjee

New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): Political leaders on Wednesday slammed TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee for his 'unparliamentary remarks' for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri. The political parties are up in arms against the use of derogatory language for any leader. The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday threatened to bring censure resolution against Banerjee if he does not apologise for objectionable remarks. Banerjee while addressing a public gathering in West Bengal had attacked BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh, grandson of Shastri, and used offensive language. Politicos said that government should take strict action in the matter and not allow to leaders to go away with such remarks.

Dhaka holds Photo Exhibition dedicated to 1971 Liberation War

Dhaka, Dec 10 (ANI): A photo exhibition depicting the atrocities committed during the Liberation War of 1971 is being held in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka. Titled '1971 Genocide and Tortures', the exhibition has been organised by Bangladesh National Museum and Genocide and Torture Archive and Museum Trust as the nation observes December as the month of Liberation. The eight-day exhibition aims to illustrate the torture the people of the country were subjected to. It also offers a glimpse into the past to the young generation and helps them learn about the freedom struggle of Bangladesh. Meanwhile, a visitor Fatema Mamun, said the photos at the exhibition reminded her of the days when she lived in constant fear. On display at the exhibition were numerous paintings, photographs, sketches and replicas of artworks by eminent artists of the country to portray the heinous and inhuman torture committed by the Pakistani occupation army and the level of horror faced by the people.

College students in Bihar observe Human Rights Day

Patna, Dec 10 (ANI): Students of a women's college in Bihar formed a human chain on Wednesday (December 10) on the occasion of Human Rights Day. Students held banners and placards to raise awareness about human rights and endorsed the significance of the day. Human Rights Day is a United Nations (UN) endeavor to end discrimination and uplift the global human rights conditions. It was on this day in 1948, that the General Assembly of the UN had adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. December 10 marks Human Rights Day, the 66th anniversary of the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), signed by 48 nations - with just eight abstentions.

Nursery admissions: HC refuses to stay scrapping of points system

New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to grant interim stay on its single judge verdict quashing the point-system for nursery admission brought in by the Lieutenant Governor for private unaided schools in Delhi. A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw said the order of single judge was based on certain findings, and it will hear the appeals of Delhi government and NGO Social Jurist in detail Jan 15, 2015.

Politicos on government removing section 309 from IPC

New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): The Home Ministry on Wednesday informed Parliament that the government has decided to delete section 309 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises attempt to suicide. The Centre also said that 18 states and four union territories have supported deleting Sec 309. The move was recommended by the Law Commission along with amendment of certain other sections of the CrPC and IPC in consultation with all stake holders. Many politicos backed the decision.

SC directs BCCI to postpone elections till Jan 31

New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): Supreme Court on Wednesday directed BCCI to postpone its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections of the office-bearers till 31st January, 2015 after BCCI sidelined chief N Srinivasan appealed that if he is re-elected he will keep away from all matters and running of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The next hearing in the case is scheduled on December 15.
