Congress calls for shutdown in Gujarat against 'Vibrant Gujarat Summit'

Ahmedabad, Jan 10 (ANI): Congress party has called for a shutdown on Saturday in Gujarat protesting against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's proposed "Vibrant Gujarat Summit" beginning Sunday. Congress activists have been holding protests at important government installations across the state. Dozens of Congress activists held a protest outside the Income Tax department in Ahmedabad city before they were detained by police. A Congress activist Ketan Rawal said the government was holding the summit to attract investments in the state at a time when it had failed to tackle important issues. The summit, which is an annual event, was the brainchild of Narendra Modi when he ruled the state before becoming prime minister last year. The ruling BJP slammed the Congress for organising protests accusing it of putting brakes on development.

People await snowfall as cold wave persists in JandK

Srinagar, Jan 10 (ANI): There is no respite from severe cold in Kashmir where residents await snowfall in hope of better weather conditions. The plummeting temperature has left several water bodies, including the famed Dal Lake, frozen. The persistent cold wave has forced people to stay indoors in capital city, Srinagar. Another resident Mohammed Iqbal said that it became extremely difficult to go out for work in these conditions as the number of public vehicles plying on roads too comes down with the dipping temperature. The Kashmir Valley is in the midst of the 40-day-long Chillai Kalan, believed to be the harshest winter period. It had begun on December 21, 2014. Snowfall in states like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh has a direct impact in other northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Janata Parivar meets at Mulayams residence to take forward merger process

New Delhi, Jan 10 (ANI): JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar said that Janata Parivar held discussions at Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s residence to take forward the merger process. He added that the SP chief will have talks with former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and INLD leaders and the final decision on the merger will be taken in the next meeting.

BJP didn't find fault in AAP's 49 days' rule, shows governance was good: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 10 (ANI): AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday backlashed at BJP after Prime Minister Narendra Modi indirectly hit Kejriwal for calling himself an anarchist. Kejriwal said that BJP is not left with any positive agenda that is why it is reflecting on all negative issues for the polls. He added that no BJP leader in his speech could find faults in the 49 days' rule of AAP, which means that it has given a certificate of good governance. Kejriwal then clarified that whatever he may be he is not corrupt.

Reactions pour in after PM Modi kick starts BJP's poll campaign in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 10 (ANI): Reactions poured in on Saturday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi kick started BJP's campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi. BJP unit in Delhi chief Satish Upadhyay and BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi praised PM Modi for his speech. Congress leader Anand Sharma slammed PM Modi for behaving like an 'event manager' of BJP and hoarding crowd for his rally. Congress leader J P Aggarwal criticized Modi for delivering a non-fruitful speech. Congress leader Shobha Oza claimed the Modi's "vijay rath" would be broken till it reaches Delhi. Congress leader Manish Tewari slammed Modi for only talking about development and not taking action in that regard.

Stringent security measures in place at Indian coasts: Admiral RK Dhowan

Bengaluru, Jan 10 (ANI): Chief of Indian Navy, Admiral RK Dhowan on Saturday said that stringent security measures were being observed at all the coasts across the country. He said that a strict security cover was in place in these areas even before the Pakistani 'terror boat' was intercepted by Indian Coast Guard off the Porbandar coast in western India on the New Year's Eve. Admitting that dealing with the "non-sate actors" was a tough job, Dhowan said that thousands of merchant ships were in the Indian waters at any given time, guarding the country's 7516 km coastline. The Indian Navy Chief asserted that the naval troops were ready to take on any challenge at any given time.

2014 will be known as 'Vijay Varsh' for BJP: Amit Shah

New Delhi, Jan 10 (ANI): BJP chief Amit Shah on Saturday while addressing the Abhinandan rally in the national capital said the year 2014 will be known as 'Vijay Varsh' for his party in the nation's history. Shah, who is making an all out effort to ensure the party's continuous winning streak under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the BJP is a party known to fulfill its promises. Highlighting the achievements of the NDA Government, Shah said the BJP has managed to keep inflation under control, including reducing the prices of diesel and petrol. Sanjay Dutt's furlough extension request rejected, leaves for Yerwada Prison

Mumbai, Jan 10 (ANI): Bollywood Actor Sanjay Dutt left for Yerawada Jail in Pune on Saturday after Dutt's request for an extension in his furlough was rejected. Dutt said that he has been a law abiding citizen and that there is no favor for him because he is a celebrity. He urged the people to pray for his early release. Dutt had sought 14 days extension after exhausting the two weeks granted to him by jail officials. The decision on his extension plea came after the Mumbai police submitted its report to the Yerwada prison authorities. Dutt is serving 42 months of his five year sentence from May 2013 for illegal possession of arms in a case related to the 1993 serial blasts. So far, he has spent over 100 days out of jail between May 2013 to May 2014 either on furlough or parole.
