Court sends six men accused of raping a Japanese student to jail till Jan 30

Kolkata, Jan 16 (ANI): A court on Friday sent six men accused of gang raping a 23-year-old Japanese student to jail till January 30. The six accused, Mohammad Sabir, Washim Khan, Sahid Iqbal, Mohammad Wasim, Javed Khan and Sajid Khan, were produced before a court in Kolkata. Kolkata police busted a racket of tour guides, who duped Japanese students and tourists. Three tour guides lured a Japanese student and took her to Gaya city in Bihar, where they were joined by three more people, and then gang-raped her and looted her of rupees 25,000. The Japanese tourist alleged that she was raped on November 23, 2014 and a complaint was filed on November 26 in Kolkata.

Security stepped up in Kashmir ahead of Obama's visit

Srinagar, Jan 16 (ANI): Security has been strengthened in Jammu and Kashmir in view of US President Barack Obama's visit later in January for Republic Day celebrations. Inspector General of paramilitary Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF), SK Bhandari, said that the force was leaving no stone unturned to ensure full-proof security. Bhandari said infiltration bids are likely to rise in the state ahead of the high-profile visit. Reportedly, the security forces on Friday captured a dreaded terrorist belonging to the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) from Choora area in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore district. The LeT militant, identified as Abu Mawya, was reportedly hiding inside the house of a Sarpanch in the Choora locality from where he was arrested by the Special Operation Group.

Cold weather conditions disrupt normal life in northern India

Lucknow/ Shimla, Jan 16 (ANI): Northern India continues to reel under cold weather conditions. Normal life has been disrupted in many northern states due to thick fog and extreme cold. Dense fog has been reported in most of Northern India which directly affected several train and flight services. People were seen sitting near bonfires to keep themselves warm. The sudden dip in temperatures is said to have been caused by snowfall in upper regions of northern India and has adversely impacted the upper half of the country. Temperature in hill town of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh has dropped below zero degree due to the snowfall. Snowfall in states like Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh has a direct impact in other northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Petrol price cut by Rs 2.42 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.25 a litre

New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): Oil marketing companies on Friday cut petrol prices by Rs 2.42 while it cut diesel price by Rs 2.25 per litre. Meanwhile, the government raised the excise duties on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 a litre. Retail pump rates will remain unchanged as the increase in excise duty neutralises the cut in petrol and diesel prices warranted from crude oil price slumping to about USD 46 per barrel. The increase, the fourth since Prime Minister Narendra Modi lifted diesel price controls in October' seeks to cash in on lower world oil prices to bolster strained government finances without stoking inflation. The Finance Ministry notification said the excise duty hike will be effective from midnight tonight.

Japanese foreign minister meets PM Modi in New Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday at the start of a two-day trip aimed at boosting ties between Asia's second and third largest economies. Kishida's trip comes on the heels of the crushing win of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in national polls last month and a visit by Modi to Japan last year. Kishida arrived in New Delhi on Friday to co-chair the eighth India-Japan Strategic Dialogue with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj on Saturday. The two foreign ministers will review all aspects of the bilateral relations between the two countries and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Various parts of nation witness protests against screening of 'MSG'

Gurgaon/ New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): Protests have erupted in several parts of Punjab and Haryana against the screening of the 'Messenger of God' featuring Dera Saccha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in lead role. Members of INLD and various other organizations held protests in Gurgaon against the controversial film. The protesters carried flags and shouted slogans but were later detained by police. The district officials in Haryana and Punjab have been asked by respective state authorities to take necessary steps to maintain law and order in view of the alleged clearance to the movie. Protest also took place in the national capital by the workers and leaders of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the Dera alleged that the protests are being carried out by people having political interest and by those who are against peace and welfare of nation.

Vasundhara Raje emphasizes on trade and infrastructure development for a prosperous Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jan 16 (ANI): Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the CII Partnership Summit which was jointly organized by Government of India and Government of Rajasthan in Jaipur. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje addressed the delegates during the inaugural ceremony. In her address, Raje said that the competition should be in performance and in participation and the relationship between industry and governments now needs to be synergic, each complementing the other, for that alone is the way forward. She added that her vision for Rajasthan is a state with modern infrastructure, expanding opportunities for employment, social security and quality human resources.
