Samaraweera's India visit reflects importance Colombo places on New Delhi: MEA

New Delhi, Jan 18 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Sunday stated that Sri Lanka External Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera's visit of India was highly reflective of the importance Colombo places on its ties with New Delhi. Akbaruddin further stated that External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had a fruitful discussion with Samaraweera, where the two leaders discussed issues on which both nations place importance. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka went to polls, with 19 candidates contesting the elections. Maithiripala Sirisena was voted the new President, beating the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa after securing 51.28 percent of the votes cast.

Congress announces Lovely not to contest Assembly elections

New Delhi, Jan 18 (ANI): Congress leader PC Chacko on Sunday announced that Arvinder Singh Lovely will not be contesting the upcoming Delhi Assembly Polls as he will be looking after the organizational work for elections. He added that candidate replacing Lovely for a particular seat shall be announced tomorrow by the party.

Security forces launch offensive against Maoist rebels in Jharkhand

Khunti, Jan 18 (ANI): Security forces have launched a major offensive against Maoist rebels in Jharkhand, said a senior police official. Security forces and police are raiding hideouts in Gumla, Simdega, Ranchi and Singhbhum districts of the rebel outfits' hotbed. According to police, PLFI cadres are engaged in collecting levy from contractors, small industrialists, traders and transporters. A police report in 2014 said PLFI carried out as many incidents as CPI (Maoist). The Maoists, also known as Naxals in India, are inspired by the political philosophy of China's late Chairman Mao Zedong. They say they are fighting for the rights of poor farmers and landless labourers.

New Delhi, Jan 18 (ANI): Expelled Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Vinod Kumar Binny on Sunday joined the Bhartiya Janta Party, ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi. The former AAP leader had met BJP Delhi chief Satish Upadhyay on Saturday. Binny had targeted party leader Arvind Kejriwal after the last Delhi elections following which he was expelled from the party.

Authorities baffled by mysterious death of fish in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, Jan 18 (ANI): Senior district officials and members of Pollution Department have rushed to Gorakhpur after thousands of fish were found dead in Rapti River. Officials have warned villagers not to take and eat fish as the exact cause of the death is not yet known. There was a mad rush of villagers to catch fish once the news spread. A senior district official, Ranjan Kumar, said they were probing the mysterious death of fish. Dr. Ranjana Tripathi of the pollution department said that the initial findings pointed towards toxicity in the river water. Local municipal authorities have also visited the spot and are in the process of cleaning the river with some chemicals.

Delhi Polls: AAP members gradually joining BJP, Kejriwal might too: Congress

New Delhi, Jan 18 (ANI): Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely on Sunday while commenting on Kiran Bedi's joining BJP said that all the AAP members will gradually join BJP. He added that keeping in pace with the other AAP leaders joining the BJP, party chief Arvind Kejriwal too might join the ruling party sooner or later. BJP leader Sambit Patra said that he is confident that 'Iron lady' will emerge as winner and 'I run man' will lose. However, AAP leader Ashutosh said that what matters in the upcoming polls is that whether BJP will work for the people of Delhi. Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and former AAP leader Shazia Ilmi recently joined BJP as Delhi is gearing up for assembly polls.
