Shutdown in Kashmir as crucial phase of election kicks off

Srinagar, April 30 (ANI): A shutdown was observed in Kashmir on Wednesday during the seventh phase of general elections in response to a call given by hard line Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his moderate counterpart Mirwaiz Umer Farooq. Both separatist leaders reportedly asked the people to keep away from polling booths and not to vote for any of the candidates contesting the elections. Business establishments, schools and transport are closed and roads in the Kashmir Valley wore a deserted look. Security is heavily beefed up in the province which is giving the residents jitters. Several candidates, including National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah and opposition leader Tariq Hammed Qara are in the electoral fray for the Srinagar constituency.

India and Georgia sign MoU for enhancing trade and economic cooperation

New Delhi, April 30 (ANI): The first session of the India-Georgia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological, Cultural and Educational Cooperation was held on April 29 in New Delhi, where both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote mutual interests. The Indian delegation was led by Dinkar Khullar, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) whereas the Georgian delegation was headed by David Jalagania, Deputy Foreign Minister. Deputy foreign minister of Georgia, David Jalagania at the India-Georgia Intergovernmental Commission thanked everyone for sharing ideas for the strengthening of ties and mutual interests.

Jhansi, April 30 (ANI): BJP leader Uma Bharti on Wednesday backlashed at Priyanka Gandhi who alleged that Uma Bharti used her name for publicity. K Chiranjeevi reprimanded by young voter in Hyderabad for jumping the queue

Hyderabad, April 30 (ANI): Actor-turned politician K Chiranjeevi, made an embarrassing retreat after he was reprimanded by a voter for jumping the queue along with his family to cast vote on Wednesday in the ongoing general elections. Union Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi, along with his family, walked passed a long queue of voters in Hyderabad. An agitated voter, Kartiken, who had come all the way from London and was waiting for more than an hour to cast vote, instantly objected and asked him sarcastically whether he needed a special treatment. It even became more embarrassing for the actor when other voters started clapping and cheering Kartiken.

Indian traders demand government action over EU ban on import of Alphonso mangoes

Pune, April 30 (ANI): The sudden ban by the European Union on the import of the luscious Alphonso and other varieties of mangoes which are in great demand worldwide, has hit hard on farmers of Maharashtra, who seek government action to rectify the situation. The 28-member European Union imposed the ban on Alphonso mangoes, known as the king of fruits after finding unwanted quarantine pests such as non-European fruit flies in some of the consignments. President of Pune market yard, Shivlal Bhosle said that this ban will result in a huge loss to farmers and traders. Along with the king of fruits, the vegetables banned are bitter gourd and eggplant. Mango trader, Raosaheb Kunjir said that the Government must take appropriate steps in the matter.

Criticism on his remark on Kargil war hero Vikram Batra deeply hurts Modi

Chhattisgarh/ Himachal Pradesh/ New Delhi, April 30 (ANI): BJP’s Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who invoked sentiments in the name of Kargil war hero Vikram Batra while campaigning in Himachal Pradesh, said he was deeply hurt with the criticism and distortion of his remark by political opponents. Earlier on Tuesday, Modi was addressing an election rally in Palampur, the hometown of the Kargil war hero when he referred to Batra's catch-phrase of "Yeh Dil Maange More" (the heart wants more) to seek votes for all four seats from Himachal Pradesh in the ongoing parliamentary polls. However, his remark evoked criticism from political opponents and from late Captain Batra’s parents. The late soldier’s father, G L Batra, condemned the remark made by Modi. Vikram Batra’s mother, Kamal Kanta, is fighting the parliamentary election from Hamirpur constituency in Himachal Pradesh under the banner of the Aam Aadmi Party.
