In yet another incident of sexual assault in Uttar Pradesh, a 15-year-old girl was gang-raped in a moving car in Kannauj district on Tuesday (July 24). The teenager was raped in front of her mother, who could not do anything to save her daughter.
Here's what happened
The crime took place in the afternoon, when the victim and her mother were on their way to visit the teenage girl's brother, who is currently lodged in Kannauj jail in a rape charge. On their way, four men who were travelling by a SUV, offered them a lift.
According to the police, the mother-daughter duo accepted the offer and boarded the four wheeler. After a while, the accused men started misbehaving with the minor. They overpowered the victim and took turns raping her.
After sexually assaulting the teenager, they threw her and the mother out of the moving car and sped away. The men warned the victim of dire consequences if they revealed the crime to anybody.
Despite the threatening, the rape victim's mother approached passers-by and alerted them about the sexual assault. The minor girl has been admitted to a district hospital in Kannauj and a police complaint has been filed.
The victim is yet to undergo a medical examination.
Meanwhile, the cops are currently investigating the incident. "An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and a massive search operation is under way to nab the SUV-borne miscreants," The Times of India quoted additional superintendent of police Keshav Chandra Goswami as saying.
"We are in the process of recording the statement of the minor, who is undergoing treatment at a local hospital," Goswami added
Similar incidents
This is not the first incident wherein women have been sexually assaulted in front of their family.
In August 2017, a minor was allegedly raped in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, by a man while two of his accomplices held her mother and brother hostage at gunpoint.
In fact, women are not safe even in the presence of men including their husbands or boyfriends.
A woman was raped by two men at Bishnupur, in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The men broke into her house and assaulted her while keeping her husband at gunpoint in June 2017.
In another such incident that took place in in October 2017, a 20-year-old woman was gang-raped by four men while her boyfriend was held at knife-point late in Tamil Nadu's Kancheepuram district.
