Islamic State (Isis) militants carried out a public execution of a local activist who documented the atrocities of the Sunni militant group in Aleppo.

Images released by Isis' Halab Media Centre shows the "media activist" being shot at point-blank range by the Islamic State fighters.

According to underground media activist group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently (RBSS), the Syrian man was executed for "daring to speak the truth about Isis".

"[The] Syrian media activist paid the ultimate price for telling the world about the cruelty suffered under the Islamists' regime," Abu Mohammad of RBBS said in his report.

The man, wearing an orange jumpsuit, was paraded at the public square with his arms tied around his back. According to Mohammad, he was "branded as a spy".

Inside the Isis-controlled area, groups like RBSS work undercover, secretly documenting the "atrocities" carried out by the radical group.

When caught, they are accused of being spies. "The campaigners face certain death - either by being shot at point-blank range or crucified in a public square," he added.

The Islamic State militants, who now control large swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, have started facing opposition from the locals.

In March, a video - believed to be shot in Raqqa - showed scores of women defying Isis' compulsory-veil (niqab) rule and chanting anti-Isis slogans in protest. Raqqa is the de facto capital of the Islamic State. Many young men, women, and children participated in the protest, chanting: "Go on Daesh get out of Raqqa! Daesh get out of Raqqa." "Daesh" is the Arabic name of Isis.

A vigilante Sunni resistance group in the Iraqi city of Mosul is reportedly hunting down Isis fighters. The shadowy resistance group recently released a video showing kidnapping and killing of Isis militants.
