Riverdale Season 3 spoilers: Will Archie and Betty get together?

They may call it teen-drama, but Riverdale is so much more. It is a not-so traditional murder mystery that blends smoothly with high school drama.

The story revolves around four friends – Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) – who are dealing with their demons in their ways while being deeply affected by the death of Jason Blossom.

Spoiler alert for those yet to watch Season 2

The previous season ended with Archie being almost sworn in as the president of Riverdale High student council when a group of cops walked in and put him on handcuffs. He was framed for the murder of a masked robber Cassidy by Veronica's father, Hiram Lodge. Quite the cliff-hanger, isn't it?

What's coming next?

Archie was playing with fire most of Season 2 and there was no way he would get away without a few burn injuries. The upcoming season will involve a lot of courtroom scenes.

Showrunner Robert Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine that the idea of getting Archie behind bars is "delicious." He may have shown bravado going around threatening a hardened criminal, but it will have its consequences.

In a chat with ET, he further added that Season 3 will get interesting as the quaint town of Riverdale begins to grapple with the increasing crime rates.

"You can call Riverdale Sin City in a sense. On some level, this next season will be about how our characters try to maintain their decency and optimism while living in the once all-American town, which has now descended into chaos and become a full-fledged crime town," the portal quoted Sacasa as saying.

What's happening to the couples?

Season 2 ended with Betty and Jughead as a romantic couple. Even though there are theories that the two may drift apart because of Jughead joining the Southside Serpents, Sacasa confirmed the viewers will get to see more of the Betty-Jug romance.

Also, while at the San Diego Comic Con 2018 panel Mendes revealed that the Veronica-Archie arc is going to hit a rough patch adding that there might have to with a third person and also the fact that the golden boy will be in jail for some time.

So, does this mean Betty peel away from Jughead to pursue her forever crush Archie? Our guesses are as good as your's but wouldn't that be a lovely twist?

The Riverdale team has begun filming and the show will return on October 10.
