Nintendo may not be reaping profits compared to the likes of Microsoft and Sony, but the company is still up for some healthy competition in the industry, as far as the console business is concerned.

According to reports, Nintendo has patented a new home console that doesn't have an optical disc drive slot.

The newly-patented console, which may or may not be the company's upcoming mysterious game console codenamed NX, was first spotted in a Nintendo US patent that was discovered by some keen-eyed NeoGAF readers. And the first thing that was pointed out of the patent was that the console didn't have a disc drive slot.

"The example system is not provided with an optical disc drive for reading out a program and/or data from an optical disc," the patent stated. "An example system includes an internal hard disc drive storing a program and/or data, a communication unit transmitting/receiving a program and/or data via a network, and a processor executing a program stored in the hard disc drive to perform game processing."

But that's not all. Going by the patent, it also seems like the console's controller will include its own "display unit", ala the screen on the Wii U GamePad. However, if the device in question is indeed the NX, expect major changes for it before the console is even made public by Nintendo.

Stay tuned for more updates!
