Pet ownership has grown sharply in India in recent years, with the country's pet care market expanding at roughly 16.5% annually and nearly one in six Indians now owning a pet, according to industry estimates. That growth has changed how households think about hygiene: it's no longer just about keeping a pet clean, but about what a pet's outdoor exposure does to the air and surfaces inside a home once the walk is over.
"Regular grooming, including bathing and coat brushing, is especially important during the transition from dry weather to the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons," said Dr. Hansika Singh, a veterinarian (B.V.Sc & A.H). "It helps remove dirt, excess oils, loose hair, and environmental allergens that can accumulate on the skin and coat. Routine grooming practices such as daily combing and coat massaging also promote healthy skin circulation, prevent matting, and allow detection of ticks, fleas or skin issues."
The visible signs of shedding season — more fur on furniture, muddy paw prints, the return of dust in corners that were just cleaned — are easy to notice. What's harder to see, according to Dyson's Global Dust Study, is what pets bring in beyond loose hair. The company's 2023 research, based on tens of thousands of respondents across 39 countries, found that three in four pet owners were unaware their pets could carry pollen indoors, and nearly half didn't know bacteria could reside on pet fur. In India specifically, the same study found only 28% of pet owners took full responsibility for cleaning their homes, and 42% allowed pets on sofas without accounting for the dander left behind.
Shedding, vets note, isn't something to eliminate by shaving a pet's coat. "A pet's coat acts as a natural layer of protection, helping them adapt to changing weather conditions," Dr. Singh said — the coat itself isn't the problem so much as what accumulates on it and what regular brushing then releases into the room. That's part of why grooming tools that capture loose hair directly rather than letting it disperse — such as Dyson's Pet Groom Tool, which vacuums hair as it's brushed out — have become more common in pet-owning households during shedding season.
Airborne particles that escape grooming altogether are a separate issue. "An air purifier can support pet health by reducing airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, mould spores and dander within the home," Dr. Singh said. "Lower allergen exposure may help minimise skin irritation, particularly in pets prone to environmental sensitivities." Dyson markets its HushJet Purifier Compact, which uses a 360-degree electrostatic filter, as one option aimed at capturing dander and fine particles in smaller spaces where pets and people spend extended time together.
Bedding and rest areas carry a disproportionate share of the problem, since pets spend much of their day there. Washing pet bedding regularly and vacuuming resting spots — Dyson points to the hair-screw attachment on its V12s Detect Slim Submarine as one tool built for this — helps limit the buildup of dust mites and dander that collect in soft furnishings over time.
Wet weather adds a further layer during monsoon specifically. Damp paws track in more than mud — fine dirt, pollen and other outdoor particles settle into floors and soft furnishings after a walk in the rain. Wiping paws after every outing reduces what comes in, and vacuum cleaners that handle both dry debris and wet spills in one pass can simplify monsoon cleanup where muddy prints and wet messes tend to overlap.
The broader shift, according to Dr. Singh, is that grooming and home hygiene are increasingly treated as one task rather than two separate routines. Reading early signs — a pet scratching more than usual, a duller coat, dust that keeps reappearing after cleaning — before they become a bigger seasonal problem is, in her view, the more effective approach than reacting once shedding and monsoon mess have already taken hold.
