A photograph of the planet Mars taken by a simple, low-cost camera of Mangalyaan was featured on the cover of the National Geographic magazine. Mangalyaan completed three years in orbit this week.

This comes days after India's maiden mission to Mars found a place on the new Rs 2,000 currency note.

There are very few images of the full disc of Mars. According to experts, Mangalyaan has taken some of the best pictures of the red planet. Over 50 missions to Mars before India's Mangalyaan were not able to take such high-quality pictures of the planet, NDTV reported.

India created history by placing Mangalyaan in orbit around Mars successfully in its first attempt on September 24, 2014, becoming the first country to do so. The mission cost Rs 450 crore and was made to last six months. However, the mission has lasted for three years now.
