The horrific photos and videos featuring the gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport that claimed 36 lives and left over 140 people injured, are storming social media.

Three attackers reportedly started shooting outside and inside Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport on Tuesday. When the police fired at them, they blew themselves up. Soon after the attack, pictures and videos showing the incident started doing the rounds on social media. The photos feature bodies covered in sheets and glass and abandoned luggage littering the building.

Early signs suggested that the Islamic State group was behind the attack, BBC quoted Prime Minister Binali Yildirim as saying. While the airport has often been called a soft target, Joanna Marsh tweeted, So sad for #Istanbul. @marklowen #BBC describing airport as "a vulnerable target" is unfair. One of the most secure airports anywhere."

The attack took place during the holy month of Ramadan, and many Muslims across the world condemned it as a heinous act.
