Iranian missiles struck the Batelco headquarters in Bahrain's Hamala on Wednesday (April 1), marking a major escalation in regional tensions. Batelco is Bahrain's largest telecommunications company and hosts infrastructure linked to Amazon Web Services.

The strike appears to be part of Tehran's warning to target US-linked companies in the region. According to reports, facilities connected to Amazon's cloud operations sustained damage. A report by Financial Times said the attack impacted a cloud computing facility in Bahrain, while authorities confirmed a fire at a business site caused by what they described as "Iranian aggression."

The incident follows earlier disruptions to Amazon Web Services in Bahrain and the UAE over the past week. An Amazon spokesperson told Reuters that drone activity in the region had already affected operations. The latest strikes have reportedly caused structural damage and power outages at multiple data centres.

The attack comes shortly after Iran's Revolutionary Guards issued a warning to US-owned firms operating in the region. In a statement, they said companies allegedly linked to the "targeted assassination" of Iranian officials would face retaliation. The Guards also advised employees of these firms to evacuate their workplaces for safety.

Meanwhile, the conflict has widened beyond Bahrain. Kuwait International Airport reported a drone strike that triggered a major fire at a fuel depot, while a tanker was hit off the coast of Qatar, according to a British maritime security agency.

Amid the escalating situation, Amazon has urged customers with workloads in affected regions to shift operations to other locations as a precaution.

The developments come as tensions intensify following ongoing US and Israeli strikes in Iran targeting key leadership figures. Tehran has reiterated its stance that further attacks on its officials will be met with direct retaliation against US-linked assets in the region.
