Social scientists often speak about "community" as though it exists independently of the people within it — as if, regardless of what individuals do, communities will somehow continue to thrive on their own. But in reality, communities do not sustain themselves automatically. Real people must dedicate real effort to building them, nurturing them, and keeping them alive.

Few individuals have devoted as much of their lives to community-building as Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

"Gurudev" is not merely a name or a title; it is a description. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is respectfully addressed as "Sri Sri," meaning "twice revered," but he is called "Gurudev" — divine teacher — because that is the role he has embraced throughout his life: guiding people to recognize the divine within themselves.

Gurudev is not confined to any one religion, nor is the Art of Living Foundation a religious institution. Rather, he is a spiritual guide who inspires people from all faiths and backgrounds to come together in service, harmony, and community.

Founded over four decades ago, the Art of Living Foundation has grown into a global humanitarian movement, creating countless communities across the world. Some of these communities may consist of only a handful of dedicated volunteers, while in Gurudev's native India, Art of Living gatherings have brought together millions in celebration and collective service.

What makes this achievement remarkable is that it has been accomplished without an exclusive ideology or rigid manifesto. The Art of Living welcomes everyone. Though Gurudev's roots are grounded in India's spiritual traditions, his message transcends borders, cultures, and religions.

Much has been written about Gurudev as an extraordinary individual, but perhaps his greatest accomplishment lies in his ability to inspire others to serve. No single person, no matter how hardworking or visionary, can build a true community alone. One individual may gather followers, but only inspiration can create a self-sustaining movement.

That is the distinction between a cult and a community. A cult revolves around one person; a community renews itself through the people it empowers.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, born on May 13, 1956, has dedicated his life to service, compassion, and spiritual upliftment. The Art of Living Foundation, established in 1981, will continue carrying forward that spirit for generations to come.

Yet Gurudev's influence extends far beyond his personal teachings or the charitable initiatives of the organization he founded. Even many people who have never heard his name are benefiting from the stronger sense of connection, compassion, and global community that his work has helped foster. Communities give people support, belonging, and the strength to realize their fullest human potential.

On the occasion of Gurudev's seventieth birthday, it is only fitting to celebrate a lifetime devoted to service. But it is equally important to recognize that his greatest contribution has been inspiring others to serve as well.

Many people possess the capacity for hard work; far fewer possess the ability to inspire hard work in others. Gurudev has inspired millions, and through those millions, countless more lives have been touched.

It is because of community-builders like Gurudev that people everywhere have communities to rely upon, to grow within, and to turn to in times of need.

The Art of Living may not be the only organization dedicated to building communities, but it remains one of the largest and most active. Through its humanitarian work and the lives it has transformed, Gurudev has helped make the world warmer, kinder, and more connected.

For that, people across the world can be grateful — and wish Gurudev and the entire Art of Living community a joyful and heartfelt birthday celebration every May 13.
