Ghajinikanth
Arya and Sayyeshaa in Ghajinikanth.PR Handout

Tamil actor Arya and Sayyeshaa's Ghajinikanth is the latest movie to be hit by piracy. The movie, with different qualities, has made it to torrent sites, which let the users download the movie for free. This development is expected to take a toll on its business.

Ghajinikanth is a comedy movie directed by Santhosh P Jayakumar of Hara Hara Mahadevaki and Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuthu fame. It is a remake of hit Telugu flick Bhale Bhale Magadivoy.

The title - Ghajinikanth - is the portmanteau of Ghajini (Suriya's 2005 movie about short-term memory loss) and Rajinikanth's role in Dharmathin Thalaivan (Rajini plays the role of a forgetful young man).

The movie tells the story of Rajini and his forgetful acts. How his absent-mindedness lands him in embarrassing situations have been narrated with humour.

Ghajinikanth has opened to fairly positive reviews from the critics, but piracy is expected to affect its business.

Almost all big movies these days make it to the internet within a day of the release. While some movies make their way to the internet (with good or poor print quality) within a day of the release, there have been instances when some movies were leaked online even before they hit theatres.

The anti-piracy cell of the Tamil Film Producers Council has filed numerous cases with the police. "Mammoth achievement by @TFPC_Antipiracy blocking 60 plus major websites. First Indian film segment to file 69 cases against websites and 93 cable piracy cases. 18 cases against theatres involved in piracy. 19 arrests. Much more efforts to #killpiracy @prabhu_sr @VishalKOfficial [sic]," the official handle of the team posted.

It has to be noted that piracy rate has increased manifold over the years with the rise in internet penetration across the globe and India.
