The last date for filing income tax returns for the last financial year 2015-16 (the assessment year 2016-17) has been extended to Aug. 5. The original date for filing income tax returns was July 31.

The deadline was extended from July 31 to Aug. 5 due to the day-long strike at public sector banks. For Jammu and Kashmir, the deadline has been extended to Aug. 31 due to the protest and shutdown in the state.

"In view of today's bank strike and disturbance in J&K, the due date of IT return filing is being extended," Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said in a tweet on July 29.

"For assesses across India, liable to file IT Returns by 31st July, the deadline is extended up to 5th August. For assessees in J&K, this date has been extended to August 31," the secretary tweeted.
